1. Objectives
Internet and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have an increasing pervasive role in today society, as they are transforming product and service architectures, production processes, market mechanisms, industry architectures, and governance models of nations and cities. The scope of ICT-enabled transformations is as broad as the ones produced in the past by other general purpose technologies such as the telephone, the internal combustion engine and electrification. Today developments in ICT are making the boundaries of many sectors blurred, are favouring a process of relocation of industries and jobs on a global scale, are generating new patterns of consumptions for goods and services, are creating new mechanisms of collaboration and value co-creation, are offering new forms of complementarity between assets that have been unrelated so far.
The course is addressed to the PhD students of SCUDO that conduct a research program in fields and topics that are affected by the Internet and the “digital” attribute in general. In this way, the course is aimed at providing the managerial and economic thinking that is required to analyse the relevance and the impact for firms and the Society as a whose of their research topic. This can foster the ability of future scholars in supporting technology transfer in fields that are related to digital innovation.
The course has the objective to provide a set of theoretical and applied tools in management of innovation to understand the role of Internet and ICT as an enabling factor for innovations in product, service, and business models that affect the competencies of future engineers, architects and designers in a wide number of industries. ICT-enabled transformations will affect industries such as automotive and transportation (connected vehicle and shared mobility), industrial machineries (new robotics), energy (smart grids), tourism and cultural heritage (e.g. augmented reality in museums; sharing economy in hospitality), construction (smart buildings and home automation), healthcare, life sciences and biotechnologies (e.g. the use of big data for genomics), financial services and retailing. Specifically, the course aims to provide PhD students at Politecnico di Torino with the following competencies:
- Understand the fundamental aspects of how Internet of Things, Big data, and Cloud Computing work and illustrate their main application domains and the barriers to the future development of these technologies.
- Understand the set of institutional variables (laws, governance rules, intellectual property rights, culture) that govern the use of the Internet and shape its development dynamics around the world and are relevant to the development of new digital innovations
- Analyse the impact of the Internet and digital innovation on society, by understanding the transformation brought – on the one hand - on firms and markets, and - on the other – on social norms, values and habits.
- Apply a multidisciplinary approach in system design and management of innovation to understand the key success factors in the digital innovation that engineers, architects and designers are required to develop thanks to their specialized competencies
- Analyse the drivers of value creation brought by digital innovation (at both the economic and social level) by taking into account multisided nature of the interactions among multiple firms in different sectors that characterize the new generations of digital innovations.
- Analyse critical factors that can affect the relevance and the business impact of their research topic, whatever it is.
