Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
This course is on basic chemistry, pointing on those aspects that relate chemical structure and reactivity with materials behaviour and automotive applications. Basic organic chemistry and thermodynamic properties of simple compounds are also studied.
Competenze attese
The students must be able to solve chemical and stoichiometric problems, to understand chemical phenomena and study materials, their specific reactions and understand their applications.
Prerequisiti
A good knowledge of chemical nomenclature and of the basic aspects of Chemistry, as studied at the high school, is required.
Programma
Credit 1: atomic structure; electronic configurations of elements; periodic system of elements; chemical bonds: ionic, covalent, metallic, intermolecular; influence of bonds on meterials properties.
Credit 2: main chemical laws, substances aggregation. Gas state: the kinetic theory of gasses, ideal and real gasses, gas mixtures; gas density.
Credits 3:liquid state and solutions, boiling points; osmotic prssure; electrolyte solutions: pH, solubility, electrical condution, liquid viscosity.
Credit 4: chemical kinetic; velocity of chemical reactions; catalysts. Chemical equilibrium; tha mass action law; Le Chatelier's principle.
Credit 5: solid state: structure and properties of solid, ionic, metallic crystals. Thermochemistry; thermodynamic quantity, enthalpy, entropy, free energy; combustion reactions.
Credit 6: electrochemical series. Electrode potential and voltaic cells. Electrochemical generators and fuel cells. Electrolysis and Faraday's laws. Carbon chemistry. Bonds of organic molecules. Hybridization of carbon. Molecular isomerism and geometry.
Credito 7: aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkenes, alkenes, alkynes. Unsaturated hydrocarbons. Alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons. By-products of hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, aromatic, ether, aldehyde, ketone. Nitrogenous derivatives of hydrocarbons, amines, amides, amino acids. Constituents of living substance: glucides (sugars), fats, proteins. Their structure and importance. Cellulose and by-products.
Laboratori e/o esercitazioni
Practical Work Programme
Practicals are carried out in lecture halls and consist of numerical applications of lectures' themes. They concern stoichiometric calculus, calculus of chemical reactions' coefficients, calculus on gas laws, on solutions' properties, on electrochemistry and thermodynamics.

Workshop Programme
Chemistry practicals take place in Lingotto Chemistry laboratory.

Tutorial Programme
Professors are available to explain the students some topics of the program and of practicals, and to check, in an informal way, the learning of the students. Students are divided into two groups.

The exam consists of a written paper, comprising a series of questions and calculation exercises, and an oral test. Students must achieve an adequate mark in the written paper before gaining access to the oral test.
