Il corso intende approfondire la storia delle culture materiali, intese come le relazioni che s’intrecciano, soprattutto in età moderna e contemporanea, tra i manufatti (dell’architettura, delle arti decorative, del disegno industriale…) e le relazioni sociali, le pratiche e i comportamenti che tali manufatti hanno prodotto, influenzato, modificato.

The course aims at analysing the history of the material cultures, that is the relationships between the artefacts (in architecture, applied arts, industrial design …) and the social relations, practices, and behaviours that may have produced, influenced, and modified them.

Il corso sarà articolato in una serie di lezioni ex cathedra, grazie alle quali saranno approfonditi diversi temi convergenti e/o sovrapposti:
- Storia e storiografia: definizione dei principi di metodo
- Histoire bataille o storia delle cose banali?
- Histoire événementielle e longue durée
- Il contributo dell’archeologia
- Il contributo dell’antropologia
- Oggetto anonimo o d’uso comune o banale?
- Cultura materiale e culture tecnologiche
- Cultura materiale e storia culturale
- Le culture materiali come possibili fonti per la storia dell’architettura, delle arti applicate, del disegno industriale.

The course will consist of a series of lectures, aimed at analysing many converging and/or overlapping subjects:
- History and historiography: definition of basic principles.
- Histoire bataille or the history of banal things?
- Histoire événementielle and longue durée
- The contribution of archaeology
- The contribution of anthropology
- Anonymous or common or banal objects?
- Material culture and technological cultures
- Material culture and cultural history
- Material cultures as possible sources for the history of architecture, applied arts, industrial design.
