The course presents and analyzes the procedures and standards underlying all the phases of the industrialization of an industrial product.
The course objectives are:
Provide a procedure for the analysis of product technological characteristics and the determination of its manufacturing process
Relate the manufacturing process and the volumes to be produced
Analyse some economical and financial aspect of the product industrialization process
These objectives will be pursued through general lessons and case studies

Through the analysis of real cases, the student will consolidate, its knowledge about the technical, organizational and economical aspects of the following topics:
Design of the product and of the manufacturing process
Product industrialization
Prototyping (methods for fabrication, selecting and testing the prototypes)
Planning and management of product quality
Through the analysis of real cases, the students will also develop the ability to face and solve the problems of product engineering and industrialization and draw up reports on the various phases of the process.
Regarding making judgements and communication skills, the students will acquire, through group works, the ability to:
Prepare technical reports with a high level of professionalism
Evaluate and solve the problems of engineering and industrialization of a product, based on the knowledge gained on the interactions between the different phases of the process
Knowing how to relate with others

Knowledge of the main manufacturing processes and key elements of technical drawing
Knowledge of the main methods for quality control of the products
Knowledge of the basis of business economics

The plan of the lectures is composed by 5 parts: Introduction, Product, Design, Industrialization, Mass production
To the first part, Introduction, we will dedicate 22,5 h.
In this part the course will be presented, summaries on manufacturing processes, technical drawing and mechanical behaviour of materials will be recalled as well as the product development process and the basic concepts of Cost / Value management.
To the second part, Product, we will dedicate 6 h
This part will include the exam of the physical structure of the case study, its technological and energy analysis and the study of the composition of a product cost in development phase.
The third part, Design, lasting 5,5 h, will include lectures on mathematical models, drawings, prototyping and testing.
The fourth part, Industrialization, will last 21 h.
It will contain technical and technological aspects (study of assembly sequence, tooling design, coding, PR release and purchasing price list definition for materials and components) as well as financial aspects (Make or Buy decisions, product investments and process investments connected with the analysis of the machinery saturation).
The fifth part, Mass production, will last 6 h and will include lectures on manufacturing plant organisation, product cost and Value engineering actions in the mass production phase.

The exercises (20 h as a total) will include:
Exercises on manufacturing processes
Examples of manufacturing cycles
Presentation of a case study and assignment of group works on the drafting of the various phases of a project of product industrialization (16 h)

The evaluation will be based on the results of a written examination with open or closed questions on the course contents, in accordance with a previously assigned score for each question.
Students who pass the written examination and are not satisfied with the result can give an oral examination on a voluntary basis. The oral examination can result in an improvement, confirmation or worsening of the results of the written exam.
