Architecture and city history:
This class consists of thematic presentations on theory, architecture and cities. The program is divided into three modules. The first is an introduction to post-Renaissance architectural theory; the second an analysis of post-Industrial Revolution cities in Europe and America and the ways they were imaged by writers, film makers and artists; the third is an introduction to domestic architecture and gender.

Architecture and city history:
Students will gain a beginning understanding of the chief theoretical concerns of architecture treatise writers and the questions they posed about architecture. They will be introduced to the transformations wrought in the urban landscape in the wake of the first Industrial Revolution in Paris, Petersburg, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, Cape Town. Students will also be introduced to the theoretical and practical issue of gender and architecture, with special focus on the domestic environment in the 19th and 20th centuries.

4.5 hours of lecture per week, with the screening of key movies about the cities.
