Subject fundamentals
The course aims to provide the technical knowledge, as well as the economic and the environmental impact criteria that allow one to outline process alternatives for the regenerative treatment of a waste stream- and the relative plant design, through project-specific exercises (case studies).
Expected learning outcomes
Life cycle assessment and techno-economic criteria for the recovery of products / raw materials from side streams and / or wastes (LCA).
Process water cycle (e.g., paper industry, dye industry, dairy industry ...).
Processes and technologies for the recovery and recycling of reagents from the process industry (e.g., solvent recovery from gas streams from coating / moulding, recovery from exhausted waste acid pickling, ...).
End of life cycle products: technologies for the recovery of raw materials (e.g. catalytic converters, batteries, waste oil, tyres, computers, appliances,...).
Contents
• Sustainable Development. Energy strategies. Planning today for tomorrow.
• Life cycle assessment and techno-economic criteria for the recovery of products / raw materials from side streams and / or wastes (LCA).
• Environmental Certification.
• Waste management. Mechanical-biological treatment plants.
• End of life cycle Products: technologies for the recovery of raw materials (e.g. catalytic converters, batteries, waste oil, tyres, computers, appliances,...).
• Technologies and processes for the recovery of matter and energy from solid wastes (e.g. metal, wood, glass, paper, plastics, construction & demolition material-, sewage sludge, refuse-derived-fuel, FOS, compost, incineration waste, biogas .. ..)
• Renewable Energy.
• Process water cycle (e.g., paper industry, dye industry, dairy industry ...).
• Processes and technologies for the recovery and recycling of reagents from the process industry (e.g., solvent recovery from gas streams from coating / moulding, recovery from exhausted waste acid pickling, ...).
Delivery modes
Practical lessons: LCA of a product or a process. Facing a peculiar problem in the field of waste and searching for an innovative solution.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Teacher's lecture notes, loaded onto the portal.
Analysis of Waste Report for the current year (downloadable from the Piedmont Region web site).
Consultation of institutional websites (APAT, Enea, COBAT, coeu, CONAI, coreve, cial ....)
Assessment and grading criteria
Oral exam with 3 questions covering the topics described in the programme, worth ten points each. The sum of the votes obtained for each question will be the final mark. In the presence of certain qualities of reasoning, and clear articulation of the problems, if the sum is equal to 30, the student will receive - laude. An additional question will be asked in the case of a lack of knowledge concerning one of the previous 3 questions. A deduction of 2 to 5 points will be made from the total sum.
