«Proprio come nella ricognizione di ogni altra opera d’arte la comprensione dello stile di ogni città comporta un confronto con le altre, e mano a mano che impariamo a vederle e ad apprezzarle come un’opera d’arte la visita di una città diventa una emozionante avventura nell’anima secolare dei loro cittadini, che riusciamo ad evocata nella forma millenaria dell’urbs.

Ora sappiamo che l’apprezzamento di una città richiede una lettura lenta del suo stile, e come non potremmo dire di conoscere Guerra e pace perché ne abbiamo scorso riassunto o ne abbiamo visto il film, così la lettura di una città richiede il suo tempo, richiede attenzione per i suoi dettagli, richiede riflessione sul suo stile: dobbiamo percorrerla a piedi lentamente senza venire travolti dall’ansia di visitarne tante riempiendone un immaginario carniere, ma piuttosto dedicando a ciascuna il riguardo che merita, senza trascurare tutti quegli aspetti contemporanei - le vetrine dei negozi o i menu dei ristoranti - che costituiscono l’espressione più recente e vivace di quelle medesima civitas della quale la generazione presente costituisce l’epigono e che ha poi, a saperla riconoscere, la medesima volontà di forma incorporata nei suoi muri secolari.

Ora la sappiamo leggere, e quelle città che prima forse sfuggivano alla nostra memoria, effimero telaio di strade a connettere i monumenti, sono diventate ora l’espressione conseguente di un volontà stilistica dove le case e i temi collettivi esprimono una riconoscibile volontà di forma che serberemo nella nostra memoria come espressione consapevole di una civitas che abbiamo imparato a riconoscere e ad amare, un’altra delle centomila città che da mille anni popolano l’Europa».

«Just as for the recognition of any other work of art, understanding the style of a city involves a comparison with the others, and as we learn to see them and appreciate them as works of art, visiting a city becomes an emotional adventure into the age-old souls of their citizens, which we can conjure up in the thousand-year-old form of urbs.

Now we know that appreciating a city necessitates the slow reading of its style, and just as we cannot understand War and Peace because we have read a summary of it or we have seen the film, the reading of a city needs time, attention to detail, reflection on its style. We must walk around it on foot, slowly, without being overcome by the anxiety to visit many of them, filling up an imaginary game bag. Rather we should dedicate to each the respect it merits without neglecting all those contemporary aspects – shop windows or restaurant menus – that make up the newest and vivacious expression of the same civitas of which the present generation is the follower and which has then, in knowing how to recognize it, the same wish for form incorporated in its centuries-old walls.

Now we know how to read it, and those cities that perhaps before eluded our memories, an ephemeral framework of roads connecting up the monuments, have now become the expression consequent on a stylistic wish where houses and the collective themes express a recognizable wish for form, which we will commit to memory as the conscious expression of a civitas that we have learned to recognize and love. Another of the hundred thousand cities that for thousands of years have populated Europe».

Vent’anni dopo la prima edizione dell’Estetica della città europea di Marco Romano (Einaudi, Torino, 1993), lo scopo del corso è quello di riflettere sull’evoluzione e la crisi del dibattito urbanistico, verificando ancora la teoria estetica nella lettura di città. Twenty years after the first edition of Marco Romano’s Estetica della città europea (Einaudi, Torino, 1993), the aim of the course is reflecting about the planning debate’s development and crisis, testing again the aesthetical theory in reading cities.
