Il corso si svolgerà nel periodo gennaio-settembre.

Le immagini della città servono a progettare le città. La cartografia urbana produce immaginari che vengono
trasferiti altrove nel progetto urbano. La tesi del corso è che la cartografia in particolare, diversamente da altre
rappresentazioni, permette questo “transfert” in quanto la carta, in virtù delle sue caratteristiche tecniche, non riproduce
la città ma la produce.
Questi “transfert” possono essere ordinati per le diverse tecniche cartografiche impiegate, come, ad esempio, le
carte nautiche che sono servite da modello per rilevare e progettare Parigi alla fine del XVIII secolo, le carte
funzionali dei percorsi con le quali gli Smithson riproducono la città medioevale nel progetto per Berlin
Haupstadt, i rapporti tra le carte psico-geografiche dei situazionisti mutuate dalla città storica e il loro progetto di
New Babylon; le carte tipologiche di Venezia utilizzate nel progetto di Saverio Muratori per le Barene di San
Giuliano, ma anche il ruolo dello schema cartografico del sito di Roma nella costruzione delle città di fondazione
coloniali.
L’obiettivo del corso è ricostruire operativamente – in vista del progetto urbano contemporaneo - i meccanismi e
le tecniche di questi “trasferimenti”, sia attraverso una riflessione epistemologica e metodologica sul “transfert
urbano” come tecnica del progetto, sia attraverso lo studio di alcuni casi esemplari.

The images of the city can be employed to design the city. The urban cartography produce an imaginary that
can be transferred elsewhere in other urban design projects. The thesis of the course is: the cartography in
particular, differently from the others representations, allows this “transfert”. In fact the map, because of its
technical features, don’t reproduces but produces the city.
These “transferts” can be classified employing the different cartographic techniques, as, for example, the
nautical maps that represented a methodological but also formal model in the survey and in the projects of Paris
in the end of XVIII century, the functional maps of the pedestrian paths that were employed by P. and A.
Smithson to reproduce the medieval city spaces in their project for Berlin Haupstadt, the relationships between
the psico-geographical maps of historical city designed by Situationists and their project New Babylon, the
typological maps of Venice that were employed in the S. Muratori project for the Barene of San Giuliano, but
also the role of the cartographic scheme of the site of Rome in the foundation of the colonial cities.
The aim of the course is to explore operatively – in view of the contemporary urban design - the mechanisms
and the techniques of these “transferts”, both by means of a epistemological and methodological study about the
“urban transfert” as a design technique, both by means of the study of some important examples.

Il Corso comprende lezioni e attività di esercitazione. Le lezioni saranno svolte dal docente titolare e da invitati
esterni. Il Corso svilupperà un ciclo di 6 lezioni
Le prime 2 lezioni saranno dedicate alle implicazioni metodologiche e epistemologiche relative al ruolo delle
immagini urbane nel progetto di architettura.
Nelle successive 2 lezioni saranno affrontati alcuni casi studio congiuntamente all’avvio di una esercitazione da
parte dei dottorandi. L’esercitazione prevede la partecipazione di ciascuno studente ad un call for papers i cui
temi siano vicini a quelli del Corso.
Le ultime 2 lezioni, che tratteranno la principale ipotesi del Corso relativa alla fondazione “arcaica” della città
contemporanea, avranno un carattere dialogico e saranno svolte coinvolgendo altri studiosi, anche nel
seminario finale dedicato alla discussione degli abstracts degli studenti.

The course comprises theoretical lessons and exercise activities. Lessons will be held also by guest
discussants. The course will consist in a cycle of 6 lessons.
The first 2 lessons will be dedicated to methodological and epistemological implications concerning the role of
urban images in the architectural design.
During the further 2 lessons will be discussed some study-cases and will start an exercise developed by the
students in which each student will try to propose an abstract for a call for paper, near to the topics of the
course.
The last 2 lessons, concerning the main hypothesis of the course about the “arcaic” foundation of the
contemporary city, will present a dialogical structure involving some others scholars. The abstracts produced by
the students will be discussed in a final seminary.
