Il corso si svolgerà nel periodo maggio-giugno

Le questioni che il seminario sul XVIII secolo affronterà quest'anno sono strettamente connesse al tema della sessione al congresso EAHN 2014 condotta dai prof. Pasquali e Mambriani: «Public Opinion, Censorship and Architecture in the Eighteenth century». Tale tema bene si inserisce nel discorso sulle “radici” della cultura architettonica contemporanea, che il dottorato segue da diversi anni. L'obiettivo del 2014 è altresì di costruire un programma di inviti e letture per un corso di eccellenza, di cui si presenterà richiesta per il 2015.

The general aim of the XVIII century seminar is to work with different original sources and to discuss, through a choice of case-studies, some of the themes that arise in the architectural debate during the eighteenth century; as is well known, many of these themes are of relevant importance in architectural culture throughout the twentieth century, and this is especially true of this year’s theme, that deals with a “revolution in communication” that many historians see in analogy with, or in connection with, the contemporary debate on media and communication and the built environment in the digital age (R. Darnton et al). Secondary aim is to ensure a correct knowledge of the historiographical issues concerning the “roots of contemporary architecture” at a 3rd degree, PH D Level. The presence of non-history PhD students is well received, and has worked excellently in past years.

Le questioni che il seminario sul XVIII secolo affronterà quest'anno sono strettamente connesse al tema della sessione al congresso EAHN 2014 condotta dai prof. Pasquali e Mambriani: «Public Opinion, Censorship and Architecture in the Eighteenth century». Per meglio approfondire questo tema, che appare ance nodale per il dibattito architettonico attuale, il corso si articolerà
- in un momento di presentazione del tema e impostazione critica e storiografica precedente al congresso;
- nella partecipazione alla sessione del congresso nel mese di Giugno;
- in una piccola serie di incontri dedicata ad esplorare le conseguenze e le aperture che le relazioni presentate alla sessione, ed eventualmente gli altri temi sollevati al congresso e correlati a quello del seminario, sollecitano.
L'obiettivo del 2014 è altresì di costruire un programma di inviti e letture per un corso di eccellenza, di cui si presenterà richiesta per il 2015.

This year’s seminar on the XVIII century will deal with issues that arise from the EAHN conress Thematic session «Public Opinion, Censorship and Architecture in the Eighteenth century», chaired by profs. Carlo Mambriani and Susanna Pasquali. The course is organized in three steps: the preparation, historiographical andcritical, on the subject, before the Eahn congress / the congress session itself / a small series of seminars regarding the themes that arise from the session papers.

Session presentation:
Among the general transformations of the eighteenth century, there arose a new relationship between the press and architecture. For the first time, a space is born in which public opinion is expressed on architectural projects of varying scale and importance. In those countries where the press is under direct censorship, public opinion finds other outlets, such as pamphlets and anonymous letters; in all cases, though, there is evidence of a new and more critical response to changes in the built environment, replacing unrestrained praise. The aim of the session is to collect and discuss published, and unpublished, examples of the interaction between architecture and public opinion during the Eighteenth century.
