Il corso si svolgerà nel periodo: GENNAIO-APRILE 2015


Il corso propone, in un numero limitato di incontri e di lezioni, di riflettere su alcune delle relazioni tra l'architettura, intesa come "corpo" fisico, e il territorio, a diverse scale. Si tratta di una strada alternativa, o forse solo complementare, alla lettura dell'architettura come opera, o come "cosa mentale", prodotto di una metodologia della composizione o di una ricerca autoriale. Al contempo si vorrebbe provare a oltrepassare una lettura di tale dialettica tutta incentrata sugli aspetti visivi e simbolici del paesaggio, ponendo al centro del quadro le molteplici declinazioni relazionali del rapporto tra architetture e territori (cosa che si riflette sullo stesso status ontologico dei due termini).

The seminar’s aim is to consider relations between an architecture and its territory at different scales. The approach is alternative to the consideration of architecture as a work of art, or as cosa mentale, result of the application of a design method or an authorial intent. At the same time, we would like to avoid considering this relationship only as a visual or symbolic one (territory as “Landscape”), by framing it on different, multiple levels, chosen through specific case studies. A reflection on the statute of both terms of the relationship will ensue.

Alcune lezioni avranno come casi studio architetture e vicende dell'età barocca in Piemonte. Una delle tesi è che nell'architettura dell'età moderna - e non solo in quella vernacolare o minore - l'assenza di intermediazioni (il mercato, la produzione delocalizzata dei materiali da costruzione, il diritto unificato) tra i luoghi e gli edifici consenta di leggere più chiaramente un nesso profondo tra questi due termini.
Le altre lezioni saranno invece dedicate ad architetture e opere territoriali dell’Otto e Novecento del nord-ovest. Qui lo sguardo ad esempio delle ingegnerie o della geologia consente di verificare l’esistenza di logiche progettuali “altre” nell’intreccio tra produzione di manufatti e trasformazioni territoriali.

A part of the course will consider architectures and case studies of the baroque age in Piedmont (XVII-XVIII cent.). In this period, the direct, non-mediated (as it will later be, via the market, the serial production of construction materials, the unification of rights) relationship between architecture and place / territory allows for a clearer understanding of the deep links that may connect them. Other lessons will be concerned with architectures and infrastructure projects from the XIX and XXth Century, in North-Western Italy. Engineering as well as geology, will be called forth as key factors in the intertwining of the material production of architecture and territorial transformations.
