PERIODO: GIUGNO 2016
Mobility and transport of goods have always accompanied evolution of human beings, being fundamental to our society and economy, representing an enabling factor for evolution and job creation. The widespread use of motorised mobility and of freight transport, based on the universal choice of black-oil almost at the beginning of last century, has brought to the useful common choice of a unique energy source, which has at the same time covered a near-monopoly condition in all transport modes; yet mobility and transport have to be free as far as possible and sustainable in an innovative way. Transport systems must be sustainable in the light of the challenges to be faced in terms of energy efficiency and share of renewables, GHG emissions, noise pollution and safety. Transport is also global, so effective action requires strong international cooperation. The course aims at highlighting these issues and at presenting an outlook to the next decades for different transport scenarios in terms of energy efficiency as well as shift to electricity and alternative fuels. The subject will then focus on surface transport and analyse the key factors to lower transport dependency on black-oil and emissions in the EU as in the rest of the world, i.e. the new technologies and solutions for transport systems, vehicles and traffic management with the related transport infrastructure and installations. |

Programma
• The evolution of transport systems and related energy use in Europe and the world: urban population, new needs, migration towards innovation, interconnected transport systems and ITS: sustainability; relevance of transport systems for the society, the economy and the environment. Energy and energy-efficiency trends in transport by fuels and by regions. Outlook for oil and alternative fuel markets.(4 h)
• Primary energy, energy carriers and vehicle technologies for light-duty and heavy-duty applications (4 h) • Challenges and prospects for a smart urban mobility and a green long-distance freight transport: new mobility services, ITS for traffic management, co-modality and inter-modality. (1 h) • Impacts on the infrastructure for Energy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Services (Logistics & Physical infrastructure) solutions (1 h) June 2016, 7-9, 10 hours in class, academic credits (2 CFU, In Italy), plus a final exam based either on a multiple-choice test or a specific technical-scientific report, according to preferences of the students. Professors: Ezio Spessa, for the part on powertrain technologies and fuels for light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and Bruno Dalla Chiara for the part on Transport systems, both aimed at sustainability, with the aid of ITS.
