Il corso ha, come obiettivo, la costruzione di un patrimonio comune di conoscenze riguardo alla critica, alla storia e alla storiografia dell’architettura e della città. È ormai consueto che i dottorandi interessati alla teoria e storia dell’architettura e della città, nella maggior parte dei casi, non abbiano acquisito la capacità di individuare, leggere, interpretare e restituire eventi e personaggi storici, anche del passato più recente. Volto a colmare, almeno in parte, tale lacuna, il corso sarà diviso in quattro parti. Una prima serie di lezioni sarà destinata tracciare una rapida storia della storiografia architettonica, in età contemporanea. Una seconda serie di lezioni sarà destinata, poi, a evidenziare l’importanza della definizione di nozioni chiave, come l’oggetto di studio storico, la periodizzazione e la testimonianza documentaria. Una terza serie di lezioni sarà, inoltre, dedicata all’analisi dei principali strumenti di conoscenza archivistica e bibliografica, cartacea o digitale, laddove un’ultima serie di lezioni sarà, infine, destinata a chiarire quali sono le modalità più opportune per avviare la scrittura di una tesi di dottorato.
Al termine del corso, a ciascun dottorando sarà richiesto di presentare un lavoro scritto, composto da una bibliografia ragionata su un tema scelto durante il corso, nonché un’ipotesi di ricerca, elaborata con adeguati riferimenti archivistici e bibliografici.

The course is aimed at the construction of a commonly shared knowledge about the critics, history and historiography of architecture and the city. It is now quite frequent that graduate students, interested in the theory and history of architecture and the city, in most cases, have not acquired the ability to locate, read, interprets and write on historical personalities and events, even for the most recent past. Therefore, targeted at filling, at least in part, this shortcoming, the course will be divided into four parts. A first series of lessons will be used to draw a quick history of architectural historiography, in the contemporary age. A second set of classes will be used, then, to highlight the importance of the definition of key concepts, as the object of historical study, the chronology and documentary evidence. A third series of lectures will also be devoted to the analysis of the main instruments archival and bibliographic research, whether on paper or digital, where a final set of lessons will ultimately intended to clarify what are the most appropriate ways to start writing a doctoral thesis.
At the end of the course, each student will be required to submit a written work, consisting of an annotated bibliography on a topic chosen during the course, as well as a hypothesis of research, elaborated with adequate archival and bibliographical references.
