PERIODO: FEBBRAIO - APRILE 2017


Ogni studente condurrà un lavoro di ricerca che avrà come oggetto lo spoglio di un periodico non specialistico italiano rivolto al grande pubblico scelto tra una rosa di riviste illustrate, quotidiani e rotocalchi. Di questo si analizzeranno cinque annate al fine di rintracciare e schedare tutti i riferimenti in esso presenti all’architettura, al design, alla città, al territorio e ad altri temi inerenti lo spazio. Ogni studente sarà chiamato a produrre i seguenti materiali: 1. una bibliografia specifica relativa al caso studio in oggetto; 2. una serie di tabelle tematiche dove i dati raccolti sono sistematizzati e ordinati in base a questioni chiave; 3. un breve testo corredato da immagini volto a tracciare alcune prime ipotesi interpretative dei risultati ottenuti.

Each student will have to examine and catalogue a number of selected issues of a non-specialist periodical chosen within a range of illustrated magazines, tabloids and newspapers published in Italy between 1870 and 2000. In particular each student will have to concentrate on 5 years of each periodical, and catalogue all the references to architecture, industrial design, the city, and other themes related to space. Each student will be expected to produce the following materials: 1. a select bibliography on the case-study; 2. a series of thematic charts where the data collected will be displayed and organised according to a number of interpretative keys; 3. a brief text, accompanied by pictures, providing a first interpretative outlook on the results obtained.

Il seminario si svolgerà nel primo quadrimestre del 2017 (febbraio-aprile) e sarà preceduto da un incontro di inquadramento critico e bibliografico nel mese di dicembre 2016.
Alcuni dei temi che saranno trattati:
la scrittura della storia dell’architettura;
l'officina della mostra;
il significato e il valore del disegno;
l’interpretazione del viaggio;
storie della città del Settecento.
Oltre ai seminari in sede, si prevedono incontri a Parma e a Roma, in relazione ad attività sul campo (visite a mostre e archivi) in via di definizione e che saranno esplicitate nel programma definitivo. Agli studenti sarà chiesto di analizzare a fondo un libro, un documento o una fonte, e di presentare gli esiti nel seminario conclusivo. Il corso è propedeutico anche alla preparazione di un viaggio a tema settecentesco nel 2017

Course program:
The seminar will take place between January and April 2017, with a presentation and opening seminar taking place in december (readings and preliminary research will be assigned then). Among thte themes that will be explored in the thematic seminars:
- writing architectural istory in the long eighteenth century
- exhibiting early modern architecture
- meaning and value of architectural drawing
- the interpretation of travel
- histories of the city in the eighteenth century
Some lectures will take place in Turin; at least once, however, the lectures will move to Parma and Rome, to experience specific opportunities (visits to exhibits, archives, buildings). A detailed program will be handed out in autumn 2016 before the start of the course. In order to validate the course, students will be in charge of the analysis of a book, a document or another kind of primary source. These works will be discussed in the final seminar.
