‘Architettura e grande pubblico’.
Dalle origini dell’età contemporanea la nascita di un pubblico di massa e l’affermarsi di una nuova nozione di opinione pubblica insieme alla diffusione della stampa su larga scala producono una svolta significativa nei modi di comunicare, giudicare e interpretare la città, l’architettura e l’ambiente costruito (R. Wittman, Architecture, Print Culture and the Public sphere in Eighteenth century France, London – New York 2007). Il corso intende approfondire i seguenti temi: qual è lo spazio occupato dal discorso sull’architettura, la città e l’ambiente costruito in Italia dalla nascita dello stato unitario ad oggi? Qual è il ruolo giocato in questo discorso dalla stampa, dalle riviste illustrate e da altre forme di pubblicazioni periodiche popolari o rivolte al grande pubblico? Quali linguaggi, verbali e visivi, si usano per veicolare la cultura architettonica ad un pubblico crescente di lettori? Quale tipo d’interazione, al di là della mera celebrazione di opere e autori, vi è stata tra la cultura architettonica e il pubblico generale dei non esperti?

"Architecture and the Public at Large’
Since the beginning of the contemporary age the rise a of a mass public and a reconfigured public sphere along with the diffusion of the press have brought a significant shift in the way the city and its architecture are approached, interpreted and judged (R. Wittman, Architecture, Print Culture and the Public sphere in Eighteenth century France, London – New York 2007). This course seeks to address the following questions: what has been the space for the emergence of a public opinion regarding architecture, the city and their main actors (architects, designers, decision makers) in Italy from the rise of the national state until the end of the last century? What role was played in this respect by the press, the illustrated journals and magazines and other genres of popular publications? Which languages, both verbal and visual, were used to convey the architectural knowledge to a new and growing audience of readers? What kind of interaction, other than the uncritical praise, has there been between the architectural knowledge and the general public of the non-experts?

Ogni studente condurrà un lavoro di ricerca che avrà come oggetto lo spoglio di un periodico non specialistico italiano rivolto al grande pubblico scelto tra una rosa di riviste illustrate, quotidiani e rotocalchi. Di questo si analizzeranno cinque annate al fine di rintracciare e schedare tutti i riferimenti in esso presenti all’architettura, al design, alla città, al territorio e ad altri temi inerenti lo spazio. Ogni studente sarà chiamato a produrre i seguenti materiali: 1. una bibliografia specifica relativa al caso studio in oggetto; 2. una serie di tabelle tematiche dove i dati raccolti sono sistematizzati e ordinati in base a questioni chiave; 3. un breve testo corredato da immagini volto a tracciare alcune prime ipotesi interpretative dei risultati ottenuti.

Each student will have to examine and catalogue a number of selected issues of a non-specialist periodical chosen within a range of illustrated magazines, tabloids and newspapers published in Italy between 1870 and 2000. In particular each student will have to concentrate on 5 years of each periodical, and catalogue all the references to architecture, industrial design, the city, and other themes related to space. Each student will be expected to produce the following materials: 1. a select bibliography on the case-study; 2. a series of thematic charts where the data collected will be displayed and organised according to a number of interpretative keys; 3. a brief text, accompanied by pictures, providing a first interpretative outlook on the results obtained.
