The seminar will be dedicated to a review and analysis of key literature and theories on the study of urban memory. In particular, the course will explore the ways in which memory studies have influenced research and education in the field of architecture and urban studies from WWII to the present day.
The activities of the seminar are linked to the research project "Memory and the city: assessing tools for interdisciplinary research and teaching", jointly undertaken by Politecnico di Torino and EPFL Lausanne in 2016-17, under the coordination of Filippo De Pieri and Florence Graezer Bideau.

Il seminario sarà dedicato a una revisione e un’analisi critica di alcuni lavori e teorie di riferimento legati allo studio del rapporto tra memoria e città. In particolare, si indagheranno i modi in cui gli studi sulla memoria hanno influenzato la ricerca e l’insegnamento nel campo dell’architettura e degli studi urbani dal secondo dopoguerra ad oggi.
Le attività del seminario sono strettamente legate al progetto di ricerca "Memory and the city: assessing tools for interdisciplinary research and teaching", condotto congiuntamente dal Politecnico di Torino e dall’EPFL di Losanna nel 2016-17 e coordinato da Filippo De Pieri e Florence Graezer Bideau.

Students will be asked to present and discuss a critically focused paper reviewing both classic and recently published works on urban memory. Each student will ideally present a book or a selection of articles, replacing them within their cultural context, analyzing them from a methodological point of view and discussing their interest for contemporary architectural research and education.
Doctoral students from EPFL will be involved in the activities of the seminar.
The seminar will be held in English.

Agli studenti sarà richiesto di presentare e discutere un paper incentrato sulla revisione critica di alcuni studi sulla memoria urbana (scelti tra studi considerati di riferimento oppure di pubblicazione più recente). Ogni studente dovrà idealmente concentrare il proprio lavoro su un libro o una selezione di articoli, ricollocandoli nel loro contesto, analizzandoli da un punto di vista metodologico e discutendo il loro interesse per la ricerca e l’insegnamento contemporanei in ambito architettonico.
Dottorandi di EPFL saranno coinvolti nelle attività del seminario.
Il seminario si terrà in inglese.
