PERIODO: SETTEMBRE 2017

The process for conducting doctoral research focuses on the scientific and technological aspects, and on the ability of the researcher to study independently a new topic and to innovate. In parallel to the scientific research, which is required for completing a doctoral thesis, the researcher, for the first time in his life, starts to manage tasks and situations that he was not trained to perform. Most candidates spent about 16 years preparing themselves for academic research, however they were not trained to cope with various managerial challenges that are not scientific. In some cases, young researchers cannot distinguish between problems that were caused by lack of administrative skills or by lack of academic competency. This lack of understanding may cause disappointment or even lead to unnecessary crises. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce new management tools that will help to understand the managerial process needed for the successful completion of a doctoral research.

The course is organized for PhD candidates of XXXI and XXXII Cycle.
Programma
Workshop’s objectives:
- To explain the nature of project management in general
- To teach how to plan and to manage efficiently a doctoral research as a project
- To give the graduate students practical tools for managing their own research project
- To discuss with the candidates typical "Ph.D. Crises" and ways to overcome them.

The structure of the workshop:
- Eight hours workshop divided into two sections of four hours each, in two consecutive days. Between the two meetings the candidates will prepare and submit to the lecturer their own research WBS and plan (Gantt). (The lecturer be available to assist)
- Participation in both parts of the workshop is mandatory.

Uniqueness of the workshop:
Project management tools are generic, therefore the workshop provides a platform for graduate students from all academic schools to attend the meetings together and to interact. Workshops at the Graduate School of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and at the Technion, Haifa, Israel, have shown that regardless of the academic field, the management tasks that are required to manage a doctoral research project and to write a dissertation, are quite similar.
