Presentazione
The course is given in English.

Modern society is fast moving towards a real-time world-wide connectivity based on the information transmission using digital electro-magnetic signals. Digital transmission and digital signal processing are techniques used by commodities such as internet-connected devices (smart-phones, tablets, PCs, smart-TVs, etc...), satellite navigation systems and audio and video processing devices.

The scope of the class is to introduce the students to the use of digital signals for communications purposes and to present an overview of systems and applications using such techniques that are part of everyday life.

The course aims at highlighting the engineering aspects, as well as discussing the general principles and requirements for the designing of innovative user services, exploiting the leading edge of information and communications technologies (ICT). Concepts are contextualized starting from an historical evolution point of view.

The course provides the basic principles to understand the implementation of digital transmission systems and signal processing devices, and discusses the design and implementation of a number of significant applications in communications, networking and positioning, as examples of complex engineering systems in the ICT field.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
• First level knowledge of information and communications technologies and their pervasive use in several fields and disciplines that will be deepen in advanced courses.
• Introduction to the design of complex systems and the trade-offs between complexity and user requirements
Prerequisiti / Conoscenze pregresse
Basic notions of mathematics and physics provided within the high-school programs.
Programma
The course introduces the basic concepts needed to understand the digital devices and applications that are nowadays common in our lives (smart-phones, Internet-connected devices, digital TV,..).

Through a brief historical excursus, the so-called "digital revolution" is presented, discussing its impact on the modern society evolution, with special focus on new applications.

The course presents some meaningful examples in various engineering areas, discussing the different aspects of signal processing, communications, networking, and system design and engineering.

The final section is devoted to present complex systems and the most advanced applications.
The satellite navigation systems, (GPS and Galileo), are taken as an example of complex systems where the synergy between signal processing and communications is essential to achieve good positioning performances. It enables new services and applications for the future such as unmanned cars, new landing procedures for airplanes, precision agriculture, environmental and space weather monitoring.

Here is a list of the main issues that the course will cover.

• Introduction to the use of signals for communications: from the smoke signals to the smart-phones.
• Spectra definition and representation of signals by means of harmonic analysis: analog and digital signals.
• The nature is analog, why digital signals?
The analog to digital conversion: basic principles and examples of applications (images, sounds, sensors).
• Is it possible to weight the information? The concept of information theory
• The digital channel: a pipeline for bits.
• Communications media: satellite, terrestrial wireless and fiber optics channels.
• The Earth within a digital web: internet and communications networks.
• Never got lost: the positioning principles of satellite navigation, GPS and Galileo systems and applications
