The History and Design Atelier is structured around a continuous dialogue between the two disciplines of Architectural History and Architectural Design. Theoretical lectures and practical studios will focus on major themes and issues regarding the architectural and urban project from the Antiquity to the contemporary age, depending on the topic chosen for the analysis and design activity.

The History and Design Atelier aims at promoting the following skills: - the knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture and the related disciplines; - the understanding of the social and cultural background in which the architectures, the cities and the built environment are (and have been) shaped and transformed; - the awareness of the processes that guide the Architect in the choice of the solution that adequately answers to the programme requirements; - the ability to gather, organize and interpret correctly the historical information at the different scales; - the ability to work in team in order to find appropriate solutions to design problems by taking into account the programme requirements, the social and cultural values, as well as the limits and potentialities implicit in contexts; - the capacity to apply the acquired tools and methods to the single disciplines, and recognise their mutual interactions; - the capacity to critically analyse the design process referred to the single building in its relation with the pre-existing conditions, the urban and the environmental scales; - the capacity to elaborate a simple historical/critical analysis (texts or schemes) about the city and its architectures; - the capacity to comply with the deadlines of practical exercises and delivery of papers, analogously to what typically happens in the professional world; - the capacity to complete an architectural project within a given deadline.

- The basic skills and competencies about Urban Planning/Architectural Design, will be taken for granted, even considering the various background of the students. The general skill on interpretation of critical texts on Architectural History is similarly considered as a common base.

The studio aims to provide students with useful tools for the development of the design process, starting with the knowledge of the study area and its historical transformation, through the analysis of the elements that have contributed to define its present form: the urban design and the relationship between the city landscape form, the ways of settlement and the design of the architectures. The studio will aim also to answer a specific issue: the urban redesign of the open spaces of the San Salvario neighborhood. The studio topics include: - open spaces design encouraging gathering, outdoor activities and soft mobility; - strengthen the connection city-river; - study the insertion of new architectures in the existing city fabric. Students will be required to learn the vocabulary of the history of the territory and architecture, to seize the instruments for the representation of the landscape and settlements historical structure. Then, after having understood the urban logics, they will be asked to define a design process aimed to develop proposals for the study area architectural and urban transformation. The lessons will be both specific (by the teachers), both seminars with the presence of experts. The seminar model is specific of the Studio approach. Historical lessons will be specifically on: - the use of historical cartography for the analysis of urban development - elements on Turin urban development - contributions on the study area urban organisation - European history of Architecture in relation with Turin Architecture Design lessons will be specifically on: - open spaces design approaches - new into old: design strategies and methods - buildings, open spaces and ways - design as a way to enhance urban features and relations Part of the lessons will be given in form of seminary involving both the teachers and collaborators of the two disciplines.

There will be joint site surveys between the disciplines that make up the studio and contributions from experts involved because of their specific expertise on the studio topic and the site. The studio will be scheduled in exercises of increasing complexity, each one evaluated as a percentage of the final mark. The preliminary exercises will count for 40% of the final mark, final exercises as 60%.

The historical approach will be verified step by step, checking the quality of the analysis by continuous surveys on the specific area considered, but will be always discussed together with the design choices. It will be finally represented in a singular "analytic or atlas map", with historical annotations, contemporary and old photos, historical maps and personal critical considerations. The study is carried on through a series of basic exercises starting from the "calm measure of places" mentioned by Roberto Gabetti: the understanding of places, the architectures analysis, the study of negative and void spaces, "the space between things" described by Juan Navarro Baldeweg, by surveys on site and reading of historical and contemporary maps. Fundamental part of the analysis is the graphical representation and as part of the study prior to the design work. The second part of the exercises is dedicated to a critical survey on the design theme, by texts reading and international case studies analysis, to compare with the state of the area interested by the project. The work will done partly in groups, partly individually, starting with a collective analysis of the entire project area to create a map to be used to go on specific design studies on different areas by each smaller group of students. The final evaluation will be a collective process, depending on the three teachers and their assistants verification and it will be based on the analysis of all the products. The studio will be scheduled in exercises of increasing complexity, each one evaluated as a percentage of the final mark. The preliminary exercises will count for 40% of the final mark, final exercises as 60%. The final mark will depend on: - quality of the historical analysis and interconnection with the proposed project (25%); - quality of the design (25%); - development of the cooperation between the members of the group (10%); - critical exposition of the project (10%); - involvement and active participation in class (10%)
