Dalle origini dell’età contemporanea la nascita di un pubblico di massa e l’affermarsi di una nuova nozione di opinione pubblica insieme alla diffusione della stampa su larga scala producono una svolta significativa nei modi di comunicare, giudicare e interpretare la città, l’architettura e l’ambiente costruito (R. Wittman, Architecture, Print Culture and the Public sphere in Eighteenth century France, London – New York 2007).

Since the beginning of the contemporary age the rise a of a mass public and a reconfigured public sphere along with the diffusion of the press have brought a significant shift in the way the city and its architecture are approached, interpreted and judged (R. Wittman, Architecture, Print Culture and the Public sphere in Eighteenth century France, London – New York 2007).
Attraverso l’illustrazione di alcuni casi studio esemplari scelti tra Europa e Stati Uniti in un ambito cronologico esteso all’intera età contemporanea (1750-oggi), il corso intende approfondire il ruolo occupato dal discorso sull’architettura, la città e l’ambiente costruito nella stampa, nelle riviste illustrate e in altre forme di pubblicazioni periodiche popolari o destinate al grande pubblico.
Al centro dei casi analizzati sarà il tema della ricezione critica dell’architettura l’interazione prodottasi tra la disciplina e il pubblico generale dei non esperti. A tale scopo particolare attenzione sarà rivolta ai linguaggi, verbali e visivi, usati per veicolare la cultura architettonica al grande pubblico.
Through the analyses of a number of exemplary case-studies chosen between Europe and the USA and from 1750 to the present, this course seeks to address the following questions: what has been the space for the emergence of a public opinion regarding architecture, the city and their main actors (architects, designers, decision makers)? What role was played in this respect by architectural journalism, the illustrated journals and magazines and other genres of popular publications? Which languages, both verbal and visual, were used to convey the architectural knowledge to a new and growing audience of readers? What kind of interaction, other than the uncritical praise, has there been between the architectural knowledge and the general public of the non-experts? In which ways and through which languages were/are specific aspects of the buildings and/or the architectural profession addressed and criticized? What were/are the recurring targets of architectural criticism? What were/are its audiences?

Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilità o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unità Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione più idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.
Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
