PERIOD: JUNE - JULY Michel Chaudron is Full Professor at the Software Engineering division which is part of the joint Department of Computer Science of Chalmers and Gothenburg University in Sweden. Software Design and Modeling are common parts of modern day engineering practices. However, little evidence exists in Software Engineering about how designs and models are made, how they are used and how they help in producing better software. In these lectures I will present state of the art of research and practice in the area of software architecture, software-modeling, model-driven development and UML.

Topics: Introduction to Software Architecture Design and Modeling (including definitions, industry standards) How are models used in software development? (Including: how do modeling and design relate; How do the use and purposes of models evolve over time) Dispelling 'fake news' about UML (discussing arguments in favour and against software modeling) Do UML models actually help in creating better software? (How can models be used for analysing software, How can we improve methods, process and tools for more effectively supporting modeling?) Illustration of some roles that machine learning can play in this. Challenges and future directions (including A-I-correspondence, and 'low-code' approaches )

Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
