2019/20
PERIODO: SEPTEMBER To deepen some aspects of the mathematical-physics of electromagnetism, usually not discussed within the courses for the engineering degree, improving the qualification in the electromagnetic theory and fostering the critical ability required for the solution of applied problems. NOTE: If required by the background of the attendees, some time will be spent in revising basic concepts of the electromagnetic theory. The lectures will be held in Italian or in English according to the audience
Programma del corso: 1) Physical interpretation of the differential operators; generalized coordinates; decomposition theorem. 2) Analysis of the local form of Maxwell’s equations; macroscopic view and validity of the model; integral version of the equations in the most general form; electromagnetic induction and flux rule; Galilean limits of electromagnetism. 3) Electromagnetic potentials; gauge transformation; propagation of the electromagnetic potentials; features and validity of Coulomb and Lorenz gauges; other gauges. 4) Boundary value problems in electromagnetism; Green’s theorem and application to Laplace/Poisson equations; vector analog of Green’s theorem and direct integration of the field equations; direct integration in time domain and Jefimenko’s equations; Kirchhoff’s formula in both frequency and time domains; examples of numerical setting of the boundary value problems. In order to set the agenda of the lectures, all interested students are kindly asked to contact the teacher by e-mail in advance.
Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
