The course proposes the adoption of a multi-methodology approach, debated in the management science literature (Mingers & Brocklesby 1997, Pidd 2004, Munro & Mingers, 2002, Franco and Lord 2010), such as the combined used of two or more methodologies (or part thereof) within a single, for tackling urban decision problems. PERIOD: FEBRUARY - MARCH The course illustrates how the notion of multi-methodology could be an effective means to tackle the complexity of real world situations where, besides the uncertainties referred to the ‘ordinary’ problems of modern and contemporary cities, there are in addiction new challenges for future cities. The first are connected to the fact that the project of an architectural/urban transformation has to do with uncertainties and implications connected to the working environment, values and correlated decisions. The latter refers to disruptive events around climate change, ICT, pandemics, at local and global scales, that are currently under debate in the cities and that represent a type of catastrophic event or just unknown in their effects. The specific methods proposed in the course are: Strategic Choice Approach (SCA, Friend and Hickling, 2005) and a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), with the support of visualisations. The module proposes theoretical lectures and an application of the methodological framework to a specific case study.
