CLIK - Contamination Lab & Innovation Kitchen is an experimental educational laboratory conceived as a major part of PoliTo’s strategy to foster innovative education and entrepreneurial culture. It is a place in which students can experiment and put into practice what they have learnt during their lectures, in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes a spirit of creativity, collaboration. An external firm provides a “challenge” coming from its real business and, during the experience, 30 students divided in teams work, compete and develop their solution. Challenge@CLIK- e-Mobility: electric vehicle charging experience Electric vehicle charging experience: ”range anxiety” mitigation through an optimized and multivariable management (charging duration reduction, type of usage and mission, battery life and cost of ownership) The Environmental challenges mobility related are catching on. This is valid for emissions (both polluting in urban areas and CO2 ones at global level) and energy sustainable usage. In order to realize the vision of green, clean and efficient mobility with long-term zero emission objectives, the electric vehicle represents one of the most effective solutions. This is possible thanks to the complete absence of emissions during the usage and to the higher energy efficiency of the electric motor compared to the traditional internal combustion engines. At the same time, the market penetration of electric vehicles is still limited (during 2018 in Europe was around 1-2%) and the massive diffusion is still far. Today electric vehicle batteries have limited energy by weight (not more than 200-250 Wh/kg, compared to around 12.000Wh/kg of petrol) and long recharging times (full recharge would take hours, while fast partial recharges would take tens of minutes against few minutes of petrol and diesel ones). The limited range that is closely dependent on environmental conditions (now completely adequate almost always only for urban-suburban use) combined to the effect of a recharging infrastructure not yet sufficiently widespread with high recharge times, generates in the customer "range anxiety". In this scenario, FCA is interested in the study and optimization of the battery complete system and its recharging, combining the need to increase the recharging power to reduce its duration with the need to preserve the useful life of the batteries. With the aim of optimizing the recharging time compared to its cost and the route to be made.

The main goal is to involve students in learning initiatives capable of bridging the gap between the theory taught by the University and the skills required to work in a team by companies. Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate in a complex and multidisciplinary context. Information research: Retrieval, Data collection and Utilization of information to support teamwork activities. Hard Skills: Put into practice what they have learnt during their lectures in order to resolve a real problem coming from partner firms. Soft Skills: Teamwork under conditions close to the ones of a real business environment, self-assessment and work organization. At the end of this activity, students will be readier to work in team according the multidisciplinarity required by companies and analyze the problem having a comprehensive view of technical and market issues.

The main targets of the proposed activity are: • Development of a model, able to identify the optimal percentage of battery recharge basing on the expected daily travels, recharge power and price. • Evaluate the impact of power charging level on the duration of batteries (trade-off).

The Challenge duration is 14 weeks, total stackable of didactic period. During the Challenge the students have to work in multidisciplinary Teams supported by tutors and partner firm. Every team have to work about 1,5 hour/week in the CLIK Lab, beyond the common alignment meetings. The event will take place at the Lab CLIK (Contamination Lab and Innovation Kitchen), located in the central building of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24), with the following program: ● Kick Off & Team Building: the partner company and tutors will hold a session on the issues of the challenge. There will be the team building for the establishment of multidisciplinary teams. Common meetings of 2 days. Date: 1th and 2th October. ● Problem Analysis and Idea Creation: two weeks in which the teams will analyze the problem in details. A team of mentors will support the teams through scheduled meetings. ● Idea Presentation: each team will present (by a pitch) the problem and the proposed solution. Common meeting of 1 day. Date: 15th October. ● Prototyping and Development: teams will meet at CLIK on a weekly basis to meet with mentors who will provide support to the development of the project. 11 weeks of team work. ● Mid-Term Presentation: common meeting of 1 day in the middle of Prototyping and Development phase. ● Final Presentation: the teams will present their projects through the pitch of the idea. Common meeting of 1 day at the end of the 11th week. The remaining undefined dates will be defined during the challenge. Could be organized a visit in the partner company building. Every team have to work about 1,5 hour/week in the CLIK Lab, supported by tutors and partner firm. The provided structure is only an example, it could be modified during the challenge.

... The Challenge is open to every master student of Politecnico di Torino. The student can register individually or in multidisciplinary teams. The multidisciplinarity of the group will be evaluated during the selection phase of the members and in the Team Building phase. In this same phase, the participating teams will be created and approved. The multidisciplinarity of the team is a fundamental parameter for the correct development of the Challenge itself. The remaining master degrees will receive the CFU as extra-curricular credits. The verification procedure is based on: - The development of project on an evaluation grid; - Self-evaluation of team members; - Quality of the presentation during the common meeting. This activity does not have a score, only passed/not passed.
