PERIOD: FEBRUARY The sociologists Tönnies and Durkheim who, since the second half of the 19th century, challenged the search of the effects that living in cities has to us. It was indeed in sociology were the debate academically began with the inputs of Tönnies (1887), Durkheim (1893), Simmel (1903), Park (1915), Weber et al (1921), Wirth (1938), and Fisher (1972, 1973, 1975). Since then a substantial research has been conducted in the Economics and Psychology disciplines where recent merging of concepts and theoretical approaches them, started producing new insights and challenges around subjects such as choice and utility theory, happiness and life satisfaction related to urban life. This almost bicentennial academic debate has recently involved the neurosciences too from where a new discipline just emerged: Neurourbanism. This course provides an introduction to the above concepts, opening thoughts and discussions around the question “why people live, or doesn’t, in cities?” and about how to make our cities more psychologically liveable via urban and territorial planning.
