This short course on demolitions expresses the progressive tendency of the topic to evolve towards an increasingly current scientific discipline. Of course, destroying is easier than building, and the notions necessary to design and complete a demolition are of a more rudimentary level than those required to design and complete a construction but, equally certainly, learning the basic concepts of demolitions can be significant in the current evolutionary scenario. On the other hand, demolition techniques represent an unavoidable chapter of Structural mechanics: no demolition project can be approved if it is missing the collateral construction project. The objectives of the course are, in summary: to depict the main techniques in use and provide the necessary elements to identify those most suitable for specific needs, also on the basis of technical-economic evaluations; to critically examine the panorama of demolitions for different types of structures and different materials.

Demolition justifications: theme setting and overview; explosives; expansive mortars; demolition hammers; pliers and shears; summary on mechanical demolition equipment; cutters; analysis of a cutting operation with diamond wire of a reinforced concrete building. Methods involving the construction collapse. Partial demolitions (conservative); lateral fall; vertical fall; implosion. Mixed methods, special problems (parts of bridges, viaducts, etc.). Water infusion. Methods not involving the collapse; Progressive demolition (disassembling) from the top; sectioning. Unwanted effects and their control; fall outside the expected area, throws; vibrations; air blast; noises; powders. Meaningful examples and analysis of real cases (both civil and industrial demolitions).
