Challenge@PoliTo_by Firms is an innovative teaching activity carried at the Politecnico di Torino. It is an integral part of PoliTo's strategy to promote innovative education and entrepreneurial culture. These activities are organized with external firms that provide a "challenge" coming from their real business. During the experience, 30 master students divided in teams, work, compete and develop their solutions. The Challenges are carried out as an experimental educational laboratory: the CLIK - Connection Lab & Innovation Kitchen, or similar space. During the challenge phase at the CLIK lab, students can experiment and practice what they have learned during their lectures in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes the spirit of creativity and collaboration. Challenge@PoliTo_By Firms – “Dress-Up Chocolate with Care” At Ferrero, quality comes first! The product must be treated like a V.I.P.. For this reason the company takes care of the smallest details of its productions, starting from the research and using the best raw materials, up to the conservation of its products in order to make them reach the consumer as fresh as pastry. Our product is always young, like our consumers, so the wardrobe needs to be always in fashion, also taking into account the new needs led by our market. We need to care about its appearance, safety, health without forgetting the environment responsibility. Consequently, we need to create a tailor-made suit. Here begins our job: Ferrero wants to study the feasibility and the construction of a new sealing system to wrap chocolate-based food products, guaranteeing their conservation and containment. The aim of the challenge is to realize a new system or process with the following basic characteristics: • airtight packaging for the final product with respect to the external environment; • cost of material and of the entire packaging system no higher than the current one; • reliability of the system and repeatability of the final result (low waste and ability to work not at full capacity due in case of any unexpected stops); • packaging temperature near the product studied not to heat the chocolate; • cycle time and maximum cycle cost not higher than the current one; • the process must be food grade guaranteed.

The main goal is to involve students in learning initiatives capable of bridging the gap between the theory taught by the University and the skills required to work in a team by companies. Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate in a complex and multidisciplinary context. Information research: Retrieval, Data collection and Utilization of information to support teamwork activities. Hard Skills: Put into practice what they have learnt during their lectures in order to resolve a real problem coming from partner firms. Soft Skills: Teamwork under conditions close to the ones of a real business environment, self-assessment and work organization. At the end of this activity, students will be readier to work in a multidisciplinary team, a skill required by companies. They will be able to analyze industrial problems having a more comprehensive view of technical and market issues.

The Challenges last 14 weeks; they start on the 1st March 2021 and end on the 18th June 2021. During this specific Challenge, the students have to work in multidisciplinary teams supported by a group of tutors, coming from PoliTo and partner Firm, with complementary backgrounds and competencies, under the guide of professor Matteo Pavese. Every team will self-organize its own working time and methodology. But, it will have to spend about 1,5 hours/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, similar space or in remote (clarifications will be provided), in addition to the joint alignment meetings (specified subsequently). According to the Rector guideline, the Challenges of the second didactic period A.Y. 20/21 will be in any case guaranteed also in remote mode. Information on the possibility of carrying out the Challenges in a blended mode (presence and remote) will be provided.

The event will take place at the Lab CLIK (Connection Lab and Innovation Kitchen) located in the central building of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24), in a similar space or in a remote mode, according to the following schedule: ● Kick-Off & Team Formation: the partner company and tutors will hold a session on the Challenge's issues. There will be the Team Formation and Team Building phases to the establishment of multidisciplinary teams. Joint meeting of 2 days. ● Problem Analysis and Idea Creation: two weeks in which the teams will analyze the problem in detail. A team of mentors will support the teams through weekly meetings. ● Idea Presentation – 1st Work Progress: each team will present (by a pitch) the problem and the proposed solution. Joint meeting of half-day. ● Prototyping and Development: teams will gathered at CLIK (or similar space or remote mode) weekly to meet mentors who will support the project's development. 11 weeks of teamwork. ● Two Mid-Check Presentations – 2nd and 3rd Work Progress: two half-day meetings on work progress during the Prototyping and Development phase. ● Final Presentation: the teams will present their projects through the pitch. Joint meeting of half-day at the end of the 14th week. During the Challenge, other educational contents (workshops) useful for developing the team ideas and personal culture will be given (i.e. Business Plan creation, Social Impact, Communication & Pitch Learning, etc.). The dates will be defined during the course. Every team will self-organize its own working timeframe and methodology, but it will have to spend at least about 1,5 hours/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, similar space or in remote meetings, in addition to the joint alignment meetings (clarifications will be subsequently specified). The Teams, during the Challenge, have to hand in the following deliverables: • Three Work Progress ppts: pitches to explain achieved outcomes and next steps of the project, during work progress meetings; • A monthly Report: a monthly report to describe achieved outcomes and next steps; • One Final ppt Presentation: final pitch, during the final presentation, to present the whole work; • One Final Report: final report about whole work.
