PERIOD: NOVEMBER - DECEMBER The objective of this course is twofold: on one hand it aims at providing students with a previous degree in Chem. Eng. with the opportunity to explore advanced research topics and on the other hand it aims at providing students with different degrees with some fundamental chemical engineering concepts and notions.
No specific prerequisites for Team A.
The course will be divided in two teams. Program team A (15 hours) 1. Molecular transport of momentum, energy and mass: Fick’s law, Fourier’s law and Newton’s law. [Marchisio] 2. General concepts on macroscopic balances: convective and non-convective transport, distributed and concentrated streams, accumulation and generation. Mass and molar balance, partial balance equation in multicomponent systems, mass generation and chemical reaction rate. [Mazzarino] 3. Application of mass balances with or without chemical reactions. [Mazzarino] 4. Momentum balance equation is open systems. Generation of momentum, volume and surface forces. [Mazzarino] 5. Application of momentum balance equations. [Mazzarino] 6. Energy balance, enthalpy balance, mechanical energy balance, Bernoulli equation, viscous dissipation. [Mazzarino] 7. Application of energy balance equation. [Mazzarino] 8. Industrial case studies 1 [Fabio Deorsola] 9. Industrial case studies 2 [Fabio Deorsola] 10. Process flow-sheeting: Material and Energy balances applied to industrial processes [Fabio Deorsola] Program team B (15 hours) 1. Multiscale modelling applied to chemical engineering. [Marchisio] 2. Practical example of multiscale modelling 1. [Boccardo] 3. Practical example of multiscale modelling 2. [Boccardo] 4. Introduction to catalysis 1 [Raffaele Pirone] 5. Introduction to catalysis 2 [Raffaele Pirone] 6. Catalyst synthesis and characterization techniques 1 [Raffaele Pirone] 7. Catalyst synthesis and characterization techniques 2 [Raffaele Pirone] 8. Examples of catalytic applications for the environment and energy 1 [Raffaele Pirone] 9. Examples of catalytic applications for the environment and energy 2 [Raffaele Pirone] 10.
