Challenge@Polito_by Students is an innovative teaching activity carried at the Politecnico di Torino. It is an integral part of PoliTo’s strategy to promote innovative education and entrepreneurial culture among the Students.
The main goal of these challenges is to involve Students in learning initiatives capable of bridging them closer to the entrepreneurial world. These activities promote the early stage ideas coming by Students and give them the basic principles to develop their business projects.
The process is simple but very involving: PoliTo selects a macro topic, the Students create their multidisciplinary team and apply their own ideas about it. The Challenges are open to every master Students of the Politecnico di Torino.
The Challenges are carried out an experimental educational laboratory: the CLIK - Connection Lab & Innovation Kitchen, or similar space. At the CLIK lab, during the challenge phase, Students can experiment and put into practice what they have learned during their lectures, in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes the spirit of creativity and collaboration.

“Overcoming Digital Divide”
In recent years, digitalization has expanded its reach like never before.
The pandemic has accelerated an already ongoing transition to digital services, but has also highlighted and worsened the problem of the digital divide. By definition, the digital divide is the gap between those who have access to the Internet and other ICT technologies and the skills to use them, and those who do not use them or are unable to use them. However, in the current times the digital divide also extends to social rights and citizenship, insofar as those citizen cannot exploit digital services, due to lack of equipment, connectivity, or skills. Such gap is even wider for persons with disabilities, if the digital services do not offer full accessibility of their interfaces. The combination of these factors causes exclusion from the advantages of digital citizenship, from the rights of citizens and causes socio-economic gaps.
The goal of the challenge is to reduce the digital divide by focusing on citizens and their needs, creating simple, transparent, dynamic and inclusive digital services.
The objective of the challenge is to reduce the digital divide and allow easier and immediate access to the digital services of Italian municipalities and the Public Administration in general.
Taking as a reference the Italian context and the various target groups of citizens, each with their own needs and responsibilities, the objective of the Challenge is to identify solutions that guarantee the possibility for all individuals to express digital citizenship, overcoming possible barriers, such as, for example: connectivity, skills, disability.
The solutions must, as much as possible, take into account the variety of digital rights and duties, and contain:
• innovative interaction methods, extending and complementing current technologies, also in a multi-channel and multi-device setting
• enabling factors,
• contextual innovation of the administrative processes,
• management of secure authentication in compliance with privacy legislation

The Challenges last 14 weeks, they start on the 27th September 2021 and end on the 15th January 2022. During this specific Challenge, the students have to work in multidisciplinary Teams supported by a group of tutors, PoliTo and partner Firm, with complementary background and competences, under the lead of the Professor Fulvio Corno.
Every team will self-organize its own working time and methodology, but will have to spend about 1,5 hour/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, similar space or in remote (clarifications will be provided), in addition to the common alignment meetings (specified subsequently).
During next academic year (21/22), according to the Rector guideline, Politecnico is going to deliver in-person classes in line with the national vaccine campaign that should allow a serene and flexible return to our classrooms.
However, in order to guarantee the sustainability of a safe teaching reorganization, a limited amount of activities may be held remotely.
For instance:
• Weekly meetings team-mentor (1,5h/week): they could be provided remotely if there are not specific needs to meet in person.
• Alignment meetings: they will be provided in person, but they can also be provided online for students under specific conditions and expressly authorized.
In the event of travel limitations imposed by the government, international students will have the opportunity to attend online-live classes.
