Challenge@PoliTo_by Firms is an innovative teaching activity carried at the Politecnico di Torino. It is an integral part of PoliTo's strategy to promote innovative education and entrepreneurial culture. These activities are organized with external firms that provide a "challenge" coming from their real business. During the experience, 30 master students divided in teams, work, compete and develop their solutions. The Challenges are carried out as an experimental educational laboratory: the CLIK - Connection Lab & Innovation Kitchen, or similar space. During the challenge phase at the CLIK lab, students can experiment and practice what they have learned during their lectures in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes the spirit of creativity and collaboration. Challenge@PoliTo_By Firms – “D.I.Y. – Digital Identity for Yourself” The issue of digital identity is increasingly topical, i.e. the right of citizens to be recognized through a unique and cross-border mechanism, both online and offline. This right requires important protection measures, from the management of privacy, to the security of the procedures and resources used for identification. These aspects are also strictly linked to the logic of a Digital Wallet, which can contain all the documents of a subject (personal data, health care ...) and allows to provide only the required and certified data necessary in a specific situation: the data owner can decide whether the information requested is proportionate to the use in the transaction and therefore, whether to share it or refuse the request. In Italy, among the authentication procedures for online services of the Public Administration (PA), citizens have the CIE (Electronic Identity Card), distributed in over 90% of the Italian territory, recognized by the European Union and compliant with the eIDAS Regulation (electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services). The CIE allows the underlying technology (encryption RF chip that can be read by devices equipped with NFC) to be used for additional identification and security features, such as electronic gates, check-in, public transport. The Challenge requires students to • understand how the use of the CIE in Italy fits into the European context, • observe the stream of authentication through certified identity provider, • understand the underlying mechanisms and procedures of interaction between the website offering access "entra con CIE" (i.e. use CIE for login) - in particular with a smartphone - and the tools made available by the Ministry of the Interior as an Identity Provider, • understand the protocols of these systems, • propose implementations and use cases that allow a company or public body to shift the identification of users / citizens from an unsafe mode to a CIE mode, • consider aspects related to security, privacy by default and by design, • develop an example of a portal that uses this procedure.

The main goal is to involve students in learning initiatives capable of bridging the gap between the theory taught by the University and the skills required to work in a team by companies. Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate in a complex and multidisciplinary context. Information research: Retrieval, Data collection and Utilization of information to support teamwork activities. Hard Skills: Put into practice what they have learnt during their lectures in order to resolve a real problem coming from partner firms. Soft Skills: Teamwork under conditions close to the ones of a real business environment, self-assessment and work organization. At the end of this activity, students will be more ready to work in a multidisciplinary team, a skill required by companies. They will be able to analyze industrial problems having a more comprehensive view of technical and market issues.

The Challenges last 14 weeks; they start on the 03th March 2022 and end on the 17th June 2022. During this specific Challenge, the students have to work in multidisciplinary teams supported by a group of tutors, coming from PoliTo and partner Firm, with complementary backgrounds and competencies, under the lead of Professor Antonio Lioy. Every team will self-organize its own working time and methodology. But it will have to spend about 1.5 hours/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, similar space or in remote (clarifications will be provided), in addition to the joint alignment meetings (specified subsequently). During this academic year (2021/22), according to the Rector guidelines, Politecnico is going to deliver in-person classes in line with the national vaccine campaign that should allow a serene and flexible return to our classrooms. However, in order to guarantee the sustainability of a safe teaching reorganization, a limited amount of activities may be held remotely. For instance: • Weekly meetings team-mentor (1,5h/week): they could be provided remotely if there are not specific needs to meet in person. • Alignment meetings: they will be provided in person, but they can also be provided online for students under specific conditions and expressly authorized. In the event of travel limitations imposed by the government, international students will have the opportunity to attend online-live classes.

The event will take place at the Lab CLIK (Connection Lab and Innovation Kitchen) located in the central building of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24), in a similar space or in a remote way, with the following program: ● Kick-Off & Team Formation: the partner company and tutors will hold a session on the Challenge's issues. There will be the Team Formation and Team Building phases to the establishment of multidisciplinary teams. Joint meeting of 2 days. ● Problem Analysis and Idea Creation: two weeks in which the teams will analyze the problem in detail. A team of mentors will support the teams through weekly meetings. ● Idea Presentation – 1st Work Progress: each team will present (by a pitch) the problem and the proposed solution. Joint meeting of half-day. ● Prototyping and Development: teams will meet at CLIK (or similar space or remote way) weekly to meet with mentors who will support the project's development. 11 weeks of teamwork. ● Two Mid-Check Presentations – 2nd and 3rd Work Progress: two half-day meetings on work progress during the Prototyping and Development phase. ● Final Presentation: the teams will present their projects through the pitch of the idea. Joint meeting of half-day at the end of the 14th week. During the Challenge, PoliTo will provide other educational contents (workshops) useful for developing the Team ideas and personal culture. For example, Business Plan creation, Social Impact, Communication & Pitch Learning, etc. The dates will be defined during the next months. Every team will self-organize its own working timeframe and methodology, but will have to spend about 1,5 hours/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, in a similar space or remote (clarifications will be provided). The Teams, during the Challenge, have to hand in the following deliverables: • Three ppts Work Progress: Pitches to explain achieved outcomes and next steps of the project, during work progress meetings; • One monthly report: a monthly report to describe achieved outcomes and next steps; • One ppt Final Presentation: final pitch, during the final presentation, to present the whole work; • One final report: final report about whole work. PoliTo will provide a standard form. The explained structure is only an example; it could be modified during the Challenge.
