The course provides basic knowledge on main apparatuses of process industry, characterized by mass and heat transfer, normally employed either in the production processes or for utilities. Therefore, as a specific feature, the course allows students to gain the technological knowledge for the design of each single item and balance of plant in the whole complex according to the required transformation of raw materials into final products.

Therefore, as a specific feature, the course allows students to gain the technological knowledge for the design of each single item and balance of plant in the whole complex according to the required transformation of raw materials into final products.
Students will gain the theoretical basis to design multiphase apparatuses, as a single item and in the whole plant, included mass and heat transfer balances, and efficiencies. Practical classes with exercises will allow students to gain design criteria.

Practical classes with exercises will allow students to gain design criteria. The course will provide the ability to build a technological path for the correct applicaions of the various multiphase apparatuses into an industrial process, using the introduced correlations and tools.
Students must possess basic information of mathematics, physics, physical thermodynamics, unit operations (momentum, mass and energy transfer), materials properties, process plants control, environment and process risks assessment. Moreover, they have to know characteristics and performance of pumps, compressors, and electrical motors.

Moreover, they have to know characteristics and performance of pumps, compressors, and electrical motors (from previous courses).
The developed topics are as follows: - distillation columns; absorption columns; cooling towers - liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extractors - adsorption beds; ionic exchangers - fluidized beds; - air conditioning and cooling systems; - cogeneration of heat and power; - valves; - concept of profitability of an industrial process.

During theoretical lessons, each topic will be explained using schemes and graphics, to better understand the working principles and the thermodynamics, heat and mass balances. During practical classes, students will learn the procedures for the "process design" of items and plants shown and explained during the lectures. Students can work in team assisted by the teacher.

Students will be asked to deepen certain tutorial topics through web searches.
The teacher will provide pdf copies of the slides used during the lessons, covering all the topics. During practical classes, the teacher will provide the necessary tables and schemes useful for the calculations to design multiphase apparatuses. Suggested books (not compulsory, only for consultancy): D.W. Green, R.H. Perry, “Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Book”, McGraw-Hill W.L. McCabe, J.C. Smith, P. Harriott, “ Unit Operation of Chemical Engineering”, McGraw-Hill O. Levenspiel, “Chemical Reaction Engineering”, Wiley A.S. Foust, L.A. Wenzel, C.W. Clump, L. Maus, L.B. Anderson, "Principles of Unit Operation," Wiley V.G. Pangarkar “Design of multiphase Reactors”, Wiley

Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam;
... Oral type assessment, consisting of two questions aimed at understanding the acquired knowledge of students during the course. Type of questions: description and operating principles of multiphase apparatuses, drawings and schemes, heat and mass balances.
Exam: Compulsory oral exam;
The final oral exam aims to verify the acquisition of knowledge and technical skills (described in the field Expected learning outcomes) through two questions relating to all the topics of the lessons and exercises (typical overall duration: 30-45 min). Type of questions: description and operating principles of multiphase apparatuses, drawings and schemes, heat and mass balances. The evaluation of the answers is expressed in thirtieths and is done considering a) the correctness of the answers, b) the relevance of the information provided, c) the ability to respond clearly, precisely and rationally, adequately motivating the arguments produced. in the case of particularly brilliant answers, the laude can be assigned.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
