The course is specifically designed as a guide to engineers working with Drill & Blast applications, particularly in civil constructions. After a review of explosives and their characteristics, along with explosive selection criteria, initiations and timing effects as well as blasting pattern are discussed. A step by step procedure is outlined to help the engineer review blasting submittals in a systematic fashion. Air blast and ground vibration are discussed along with methods for evaluation and control.

Determining the drilling pattern to be used in different site conditions, for different types of rocks, geological features, presence of discontinuities in the medium Prediction of vibrations and criteria for their reduction, fly-rock and air overpressure mitigation Choice of the correct initiation sequence according to the objective (delays between blast-holes or between groups/rows of blast-holes) Controlled blasting (contour charges) to avoid unwanted effects (over-break, under-break, back-break) in order to respect the wanted geometry in different construction sites, both open pit and underground.
