The continuous development of 3D Scanners and Advanced 3D modeling, in addition to the most recent innovations in the virtual or augmented reality, such as the different types of Head-Mounted Display and sensors, and their increased massive accessibility on the market makes necessary the design of a new skill able to combine the specificities of human anatomy, thanks to a thorough knowledge of the application context, to the 3D digital technologies available to provide a precise and advanced technological response. In order to provide an overview of the issues also from a practical and illustrative point of view, interventions / seminars held by professionals in the hospital and business field have been planned.

The course aims to provide a knowledge on 3D tools and methods for data acquisition, modeling, visualization and management of human anatomy for developing smart applications in different fields of application such as: medical diagnostics, surgery and security. The student, taking advantage of the latest 3D digital technologies, professionals’ experiences, and having in-depth knowledge of the morphometric characteristics of human anatomy, will be able to develop operative solutions to support the implementation of advanced medical protocols, new safety strategies and authentication (face recognition), to support the interaction between man and machine under different perspectives.

The course plans to address the following topics: Methods and Tools for human body 3D digitalisation (2 CFU): data acquisition through sensors such as 3D sensors, depth and plenoptic cameras. DICOM medical data management coming from CT and magnetic resonance. Formalization and analysis of 3D digital anatomical data and definition of descriptors (2 CFU): point cloud processing, feature extraction, also on a geometric basis, and identification of descriptors. Machine learning and pattern recognition solutions applied to digital 3D models. Advanced 3D visualization methods and tools (2 CFU): foundations of Computer Graphics (modeling, rendering, graphic pipeline). Visualization systems and tools for mixed-reality, Augmented Reality in open and robotic surgery.

The course will be structured by lectures (20 hours) and laboratory (40 hours) during which students, through the organization of teamwork, will develop projects working on open issues of specific application contexts discussed by professionals during the seminars, such as: -) development of a visualization tool in Augmeted Reality (AR) useful as a support to the physician in the pre-operative tasks that integrates head-mounted display and innovative interfaces: -) design of a system for comparing specific facial areas for the identification of one or more morphometric descriptors. With the aim of allowing the student to continue the course topics also in the context of the master's thesis and / or an internship, some thesis and internship topics will also be proposed to students during the course.

Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria; Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam; Group project;
... The assessment of the learning outcomes aims to evaluate students' skills in gathering, managing and visualizing 3D graphics data related to the human body. The assessment of the learning outcomes will take place through the evaluation of a team project activity. A presentation of the project work will be udergone by all the members of the team. The final mark "30 cum laude" is assigned only for outstanding projects. In general, the following rules are valid: - students have to enroll for the exam (discussion of the project); - a personal document is necessary for the student identification; - it is not possible to use books and notes during the discussion of the project.
