The use of testing and measuring devices in scientific research requires the knowledge of the physical fundamentals on which testing and measurement are based to effectively understand the acquired data and to execute measurements in the best way. Aim of the course is to provide the required knowledge to select and to use knowingly the measuring techniques of the main quantities (velocity, acceleration, vibrations) used in both mechanical and aerospace applications. In particular, the theoretical, physical and mechanical issues of the different measuring techniques will be investigated. The applicability, the potential, the limitations, the factors which can alter the measurement, the compensation techniques, the calibration procedures, the uncertainty factors of the different measurement techniques will be pointed out. An overview of the standards related to the testing procedures will be presented. Laboratory activities will be performed to deepen the knowledge of the testing equipment available in the Departments, to train on some experimental measuring and control techniques.
Fundamentals of discrete and continuous systems dynamics
General introduction (dynamic measurements, dynamic characteristics of measuring devices, dynamic calibration). Sensors general features (typologies, classifications, operating principles and fields of application, factors affecting measurements, calibrations). Acceleration measurement (integration of results, selection of accelerometers). Speed and shock measurement (integration of results). Vibrations (typologies and measurement). Testing machines and benches: vibro-diagnostics.
