The course aims to provide basic knowledge in the geometrical design and construction of transportation infrastructures such as roads, railways and airports. Particular attention will be given to functions of movement and access to land, to the safe interaction between moving entities and infrastructures and, more generally, to expected performance levels from the functional and structural point of view. The content and the methodology of the course are consistent with those used in similar courses in an international context.

The aim of this course is to develop the ability to recognize the technical characteristics of transport infrastructure, as well as the ability to identify the reference theories for evaluating their performance. Topics will be presented to develop strong analytical skills, useful for solving problems with typical professional implications. The course will allow students to acquire the following skills: - ability to analyze transport demand for the purpose of pre-design the infrastructure and its components in functional and structural terms; - ability to evaluate the interaction between moving entities and infrastructures (roads, railways and airports) for geometric design purposes; - ability to assess physical and mechanical characteristics of construction materials. - knowing how to make and motivate design choices, - ability to identify the orders of magnitude of the numerical values that characterize the system variables, - ability to represent in graphic form the design entities; - knowing technical terminology

1. Types of transportation infrastructures and their general technical characteristics; 2. Organization of infrastructure networks, identification of mobility demand, quantification and analysis of the supply in terms of capacity and quality of service; 3. Characteristics of the driver-moving entity-infrastructure-environment system and interaction methods; 4. Fundamentals of geometric design; 5. Fundamentals of structural analysis of transportation infrastructures; 6. Physical properties and constitutive models of construction materials.

With the only exception of the introductory part of the course, each lesson topic will be followed by exercise sessions aimed at learning calculation methods and acquiring orders of magnitude. The exercises will be presented and carried out in the classroom with the assistance of a teacher. Each student is required to autonomously work for the purpose of drafting an exercise report that will be presented during the examination.

Modalità di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova orale obbligatoria;
Exam: Written test; Compulsory oral exam;
... The final exam consists of a written and an oral examination. The written exam (about 60 minutes without consulting notes or books) is organized in the following two modules: 1. module with multiple choice questions 2. module with short exercises and open questions To be admitted to the oral exam, students must obtain at least 15/30 in the written exam and deliver a copy of the exercise report to teachers. The oral exam consists of: - a discussion of the written test; - revision of the exercises report; - a discussion about selected topics (at least one question) The final score is defined by combining the results of the written and oral tests.

In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
