We need to build new cities for an additional 2.5 billion urban dwellers by 2050. To build, or drive, them nicely for humans’ life, we first need to know them. The use of algorithms and mathematical approaches for the study of urban forms becomes more and more useful and sometimes indispensable for the understanding of social, economics, behavioural and spatial urban phenomena. The terrific availability of data is continuously growing and represents a precious opportunity of analysis for the extrapolation of information and configuration of models, and eventually theories. The course proposes an introduction and examples on how to use algorithms, fractals, cellular automata, networks analysis for the study of urban forms.
