Course objective is to provide an insight of the oil & gas sector, spanning from the basics of reservoir exploration, to reservoir characterization to oil & gas production, in order to understand the main challenges and chances that non-renewable energy is currently facing and will face in the near future. Furthermore, basics of the gas storage in natural underground formations are analyzed.

Definition and description of an oil & gas reservoir. Basics of exploration, characterization and production of conventional reservoirs. Basics of gas storage in natural underground formations. Overview of the main challenges and chances of non-renewable energy: 1) Heavy oil reservoirs 2) Unconventional reservoirs: (i.e. shale gas/shale oil, coal bed methane) 3) Harsh environments 4) off-shore reservoirs 5) Storage of gas in natural underground formations 6) Safety 7) Public perception and acceptance
