This course aims to give its students a system level knowledge of in-vehicle information systems, of standards and applicability of wireless communication systems, a basic knowledge of geo-localization systems and their performance, as well as of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication systems applied to connected vehicle services and functions. Vehicles are no longer a purely mechanical systems. Electronic Control Units (ECUs), distributed in the vehicle body, implement a wide range of functions, ranging from vehicle dynamic control (ABS, ASD, ESP,...) to driver assistance and vehicle automation, to entertainment and digital information. In the next years these ECU's will grow in number and complexity, and vehicles will rely on incoming communication services to implement more advanced functions. In this fast changing scenario, it's mandatory for Automotive Engineering students to acquire some basic knowledge on Communication Systems and Networks.

The students, at the end of the course, will have a sufficient knowledge of: - cellular communication systems, up to 5G; - wireless communication systems for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications; - geo-localization systems (GPS, GALILEO) and their performance; - driving assistance systems (radar, ultra sound, cameras, laser) and their performance; - autonomous driving technologies. They will also be able to combine knowledge from the above mentioned subjects and from previous courses to address technical problems in vehicles of any kind (cars, moving bots, autonomous vehicles, UAV - Unmanned Aerial Vehicles )

There are no specific pre-requirements. However, students need to acquire the basic knowledge on wired communication networks used inside vehicles. This subject is addressed in the "Electronic systems for vehicles" course, whose lectures are given in the same semester.

Radio communication systems: cellular networks (from 2G to 5G) , Satellite networks (LEO satellites), Wireless LANs (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth Geo-localization (GPS, GALILEO): principles of operation, performance, applications in vehicles. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) & Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications: standards and rules, toll systems (Telepass and ETSI compliant systems) Connected mobility: traffic control techniques, smartphone-vehicle integration Driver assistance systems: distance sensors (ultrasound, RADAR, LIDAR) , vision systems (CCD & thermal cameras), intelligent ligthing. Autonomous driving: SAE autonomous driving levels, state-of-the art & examples. Connected vehicle: functions & services, location-aware enablers, connectivity requirements for autonomous vehicles and for green vehicles Vehicle data exchange: vehicle data sharing, Over The Air (OTA) software update, Big Data technologies, validation of functions and services Seminar on "Digital Mobility & Intelligent Transport Systems"

This course is mostly based on lectures. Discussions and exercises on some selected subjects will be done during classes.
