The course offers to the students a basic understanding of applied hydrology, geophysics, and environmental fluid mechanics.
The course is divided in three parts to offer the students a general perspective of three interrelated modules named Applied Hydrology, Geophysics, and Environmental Fluid Mechanics. The first module addresses aspects related to the hydrological cycle and statistical techniques to assess the intensity of extreme precipitation events and river discharges. The second focuses on modern technologies and data analysis techniques currently in use for the exploration of the subsurface and the third is dedicated to pollutant dispersion in aquatic environments and the atmosphere. All three modules are designed to offer a sound understanding of fundamental aspects to address problems of practical engineering relevance.
At the end of the course the students will be able to: - Use statistical methods for quantifying design storm and flood of a given probability of exceedance - Apply simple quantitative analytic and empirical relationships between measurable geophysical parameters and physico-mechanical properties of rocks and soils - Identify and critically assess transport processes in aquatic environments, and describe and quantify turbulence properties of open channel flows - Plan, design and interpret surveys for environmental engineering applications - Prepare a professional report on hydrological extremes, geophysical prospections, and transport of pollutants in streams.
At the end of the course the students will be able to: - Use statistical methods for quantifying design storm and flood of a given probability of exceedance - Apply simple quantitative analytic and empirical relationships between measurable geophysical parameters and physico-mechanical properties of rocks and soils - Identify, critically assess and apply transport processes to model pollutant spread in aquatic environments. - Describe turbulent flows and quantify their characteristic velocity and length scales - Plan, design and interpret surveys for environmental engineering applications - Prepare a professional report on hydrological extremes, geophysical prospections, and river pollution.
Basic knowledge of calculus.
Calculus: Derivation and integration (one and several variables), Taylor series expansion, vector calculus, line integrals, double and triple integrals, basic knowledge of ordinary and partial differential equations. Physics: concepts of linear and angular momentum, Newton’s laws of mechanics, first and second law of thermodynamics.
Part 1, Hydrology (20 hours) - Precipitation and river discharge measurement and estimation - Frequency analysis of hydrological extremes (e.g., intensity, duration and frequency of extreme rainfall, design storm method, flood statistics) Part 2, Geophysics (20 hours) - Physics of the Earth’s interior and rock/soil physical and mechanical properties - Theoretical background of geophysical methods for the characterization and monitoring of the subsurface (seismic, electrical, electromagnetic methods) - Geophysical applications for environmental geosciences and engineering purposes (e.g. geological/hydrogeological characterization of the subsurface, mapping and monitoring of polluted sites, waste management, characterization and monitoring of climate change targets…) Part 3, Fluid mechanics (20 hours) - Molecular diffusion in liquid flows - Hints of turbulent diffusion and dispersion applied to rivers

The course is divided into 3 parts of 20 hours each on the topics of hydrology, geophysics, and environmental fluid mechanics tought by three teachers. Overall, the student will experience 40 hours of frontal lectures and 20 hours of PC-assisted tutorials.

Type of exam: one written test (80% weight) and an oral Power Point presentation (20% weight) The written exam (2 hours duration) is aimed at verifying the achievement of a sufficient autonomy in facing typical problems for environmental geosciences. The exam script contains 3 exercises and 3 open questions. The exercises will be solved without the use of laptops, but may require a pocket calculator, and the questions will focus on the topics covered in class. The evaluation of the exam will take into account the resolution methods, the correctness of the numerical solutions, the demonstrated knowledge and the clarity of the presentation. The maximum evaluation for the written exam is 30. The oral Power Point presentation (15 min presentation + 15 min questions) is given by groups of students who will present a multidisciplinary review of a subject of choice, related and preferably expanding the topics presented in the course. The maximum evaluation for the presentation is 30. The evaluation is unique for the group and will constitute 20% of the individual marks.
