Problemi numerici di grandi dimensioni si originano dall’approssimazione di Equazioni alle derivate parziali
(PDEs); per la risoluzione di questi, i metodi numerici moderni si affidano alla programmazione parallela su
architetture a memoria distribuita.
L’obiettivo del corso è l’introduzione della libreria Message Passing Interface (MPI), un framework largamente utilizzato
per il calcolo parallelo su architettura a memoria distribuita.
L’implementazione MPI è disponibile nella maggior parte dei moderni linguaggi di programmazione, come C++ o Python.
Larga parte del corso sarà destinata a comprendere i concetti del calcolo parallelo a memoria distribuita, come la gestione
delle comunicazioni in parallelo e la topologia dei processori; sarà inoltre presentato un caso applicativo relativo alla Domain
Decomposition.
Infine, sarà introdotto l’utilizzo dei tool presenti sui cluster High Performance Computing (HPC) per l’esecuzione del software
prodotto in casi più complessi.
High complex numerical problems usually arises by the approximation of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs); to tackle the
resolution of these, most of modern numerical approaches rely on parallel programming on distributed architectures.
The aim of the course is the introducution to the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library, a well-known and used framework
for parallel computing on distributed architectures.
Implementations of MPI are available for most of the modern programming languages, such as C++ or Python.
Large part of the course will be devoted to understand the concept of distributed parallel programming, such as the
management of parallel communications and processor topologies; furthermore, an application to Domain Decomposition will
be presented.
Finally, an introduction to the use of the tools provided by High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters will be offered to run
the produced software on larger cases.
