This course is intended to introduce the world of scientific publishing to PhD students starting their academic career. The lessons will address the main pillars of this sector, from the fundamentals of journals organization to the rational construction of an article, from the peer-review process to the evaluation of research and researchers through internationally recognized metrics. The main aim of this course is to make PhD students aware of the international scientific publishing system.
This course is intended to introduce the world of scientific publishing to PhD students starting their academic career. The lessons will address the main pillars of this sector, from the fundamentals of journals organization to the rational construction of an article, from the peer-review process to the evaluation of research and researchers through internationally recognized metrics. The main aim of this course is to make PhD students aware of the international scientific publishing system.

• Scientific publishing: fundamentals and main actors. [1 h] • Journals organization: publishers, editors, boards, aims & scope of each journal. [1 h] • Developing a manuscript: motivation, article & journal type, preparing a draft (contents, order, supplementary files, cover letter, graphical abstract, journal cover), common mistakes and tips for PhD students. [3 h] • Editorial process 1/2: the peer-review steps from submission to acceptance/rejection, tips to face reviewers’ reports and manuscript resubmission. [1 h] • Indicators and metrics: databases available at POLITO, exploring the Journal of Citation Reports (citations, impact factor & 5-year IF, ranking & quartile, journal citation indicator, eigenfactor score, immediacy index), CiteScore, SCImago journal rank, source normalized impact per paper, papers download. [2 h] • Editorial process 2/2: how conduct a peer-review in international scientific journals. [1 h] • Issues in scientific publishing: recall to “Research integrity” PhD course (plagiarism and self-plagiarism, figure manipulation), bias and conflict of interests, what is missing in the main journal/article/author metrics. [1 h]
