prof. Jochen Salber - Ruhr University In the strict sense, there is no such thing as a biocompatible material. The majority of scientists are still not aware of this. This is about to change.

This is the same lecture that I will be giving in summer and winter at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum as part of the teaching and research focus "Molecular Medicine" since the summer semester 2021. It is about the use of materials and surface modifications of materials that are used as biomaterials in medicine in the form of invasive medical devices or are intended to be used in the future. It is mainly about how such biomaterials have to be designed biocompatibly for a specific medical therapeutic and/or diagnostic application in order to fulfil their tasks in the best possible way without causing undesirable problems or side effects. In particular, the biochemical reactions at the interface between implant or temporary cell carrier structure (scaffolds in tissue engineering) in the human organism are addressed, taking into account specific pathologies (e.g. aseptic and septic loosening of endoprostheses, foreign body reactions, thrombosis, restenosis etc).
