The various electron microscopies (SEM, TEM, FIB) will be presented and discussed, starting form their physical basis and ending with an overview of the ‘tricks’ that allow to exploit the instruments to their full capability. Learning Objectives Provide the attendees with an overview of the techniques described, with particular focus on how to properly run experiments. Topics Electron-solid interactions Use of electrons in microscopy Scanning Electron Microscope: working principle, instrumentation, proper running of experiments Transmission Electron Microscope: working principle, instrumentation, proper running of experiments Ion-solid interactions Focused Ion Beam: working principle, instrumentation, proper running of experiments Exam In the last lectures the students will be asked to answer a set of Multiple-Choice Questions related to the syllabus. The exam will be passed if at least 70% of the answers will be correct
