The development of civilization and industrialization since the Industrial Revolution has caused various environmental problems on a global scale, such as global warming, ecosystem disruption, resources depletion and waste accumulation. Concrete has been an indispensable construction material for social capital development and is the second most consumed substance on earth after water. But the production of cement which is the main constituent of concrete emits a large amount of CO2. Around 8% of total CO2 emitted annually worldwide comes from the cement production. To reduce carbon footprint of concrete, clinker-less or clinker-free binders have been developed, excellent superplasticizers have been developed to reduce cement content in concrete, and high-performance concrete has been developed to reduce cement use in structures. However, CO2 utilization in concrete is absolutely needed to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. If cement production continues at current rate, limestone resources will be depleted, and concrete will no longer be able to be produced after 200 years. Therefore, waste concrete must be recycled into concrete. Various technologies are being developed toward sustainable use and perpetuation of concrete as an essential construction material. The course outlines the state-of-the-art of CO2 reduction and resource circulation in concrete, and the utilization of LCA tools toward sustainable use of concrete.
