Il Corso è incentrato sul ruolo della metodologia Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) nell’ambito degli strumenti di analisi, progettazione e gestione ambientale di tipo ingegneristico a supporto dello sviluppo sostenibile. La metodologia LCA sarà inizialmente inquadrata e descritta dal punto di vista normativo (ISO14040-44) e nel contesto delle linee guida International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) della Commissione Europea. Saranno illustrati casi studio ed applicazioni in settori specifici dell’ingegneria ambientale, civile ed industriale. L’obiettivo finale del corso consiste nel fornire le conoscenze di base utili ad impostare e sviluppare un’analisi LCA, anche attraverso l’impiego delle attrezzature disponibili presso il Laboratorio Informatico del DIATI.
Objectives of the course
The course is focused on the role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool for environmental analysis, design and management in order to support sustainable development. The LCA methodology will be presented according to an operational approach to the ISO 14040-44 standards and according to the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD). LCA applications to specific sectors of environmental, civil and industrial engineering will be presented. The final objective consists in supplying doctoral students with the basic operational expertise to develop and carry out LCA analysis in their specific field of interest, also taking advantage of software applications and equipment of the DIATI IT laboratory.

Introduzione: contesto, terminologia e finalità di impiego della LCA.
PARTE I – GUIDA OPERATIVA ALLA LCA (NORME ISO14040, linee guida ILCD) – 10 ore
Storia, origini e impieghi della LCA. Life cycle thinking e Life cycle management (LCM). La normativa UNI EN ISO serie 14040. ILCD handbook e successive raccomandazione della Commissione Europea (DG JRC). La struttura e le quattro fasi di un’analisi LCA.
Fase 1: "Definizione degli obiettivi e del campo di applicazione".
Fase 2: "Analisi di Inventario (LCI)". Elementi di analisi energetica. I sistemi di trasporto nell’analisi LCA. Gestione del fine vita dei prodotti. Strumenti informatici e banche dati a supporto della LCA.
Fase 3: "Analisi degli Impatti (LCIA)". Dall’impatto all’effetto ambientale. Classificazione, caratterizzazione, normalizzazione e pesatura.
Fase 4: "Interpretazione dei risultati di uno studio LCA e fase di miglioramento".
PARTE II – GUIDA OPERATIVA ALLA REALIZZAZIONE DI UN MODELLO LCA – 15 ore
Caratteristiche ed utilizzo dei software applicativi di supporto all’analisi LCA: SimaPro, GaBi e openLCA.
Illustrazione di casi studio: packaging alimentare, edilizia/materiali da costruzione, gestione dei rifiuti, filiere agro-alimentari, bio-energia, batterie autotrazione.
Realizzazione di un modello LCA e applicazione guidata nel laboratorio informatico DIATI.

PART I – AN OPERATIONAL GUIDE TO LCA (ISO14040 STANDARDS, ILCD handbook) – 10hr
Origins and fields of application of LCA. Life cycle thinking and Life cycle management (LCM). The standards UNI EN ISO 14040series. ILCD handbook and further European Commission JRC guidance. The structure and the four phases of an LCA.
Phase 1: "Goal and Scope definition".
Phase 2: "Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)". Principles of industrial energy analysis. Transport systems in a LCA. Products end-of-life management. Software packages and databases to support LCA.
Phase 3: "Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)". From impacts to environmental effects. Classification, characterisation, normalisation and weighting.
Phase 4: "Interpretation and improvement".
PART II – AN OPERATIONAL GUIDE TO LCA – 15hr
Characteristics and use of LCA software applications: SimaPro, GaBi and openLCA.
Presentation of case studies in the fields: food packaging, building materials and built structures, waste management, agri-food, bio-energy, traction batteries.
Practice exercise: guided application to the realisation of a LCA in the IT laboratory of DIATI.
