This class aims to provide students the conceptual basis and the methodological approaches related to manufacturing for sustainability, from the guidelines to the tools for the performance analysis of a manufacturing system. This knowledge, together with the classical tools for the evaluation of efficiency, effectiveness and economy of a production system, will be necessary for the implementation of decision-making strategies towards the sustainable production. The teaching of such tools is completed by some examples of application in real industrial cases.
The expected learning outcomes in terms of knowledge and skills can be resumed as follows: - Knowledge: to evaluate, in view of sustainable production, the performance of a manufacturing system through the analysis of processes, consumed resources and related emissions; - Skills: to select sustainability indicators and criteria for analysis, to associate them with models and analytical methods, and to estimate the level of performance of a company or of a production system.
Good knowledge of the topics covered in courses dedicated to manufacturing and production systems.
The main course topics are listed in the following: - Introduction to the fundamental concepts of Sustainable Development within the international manufacturing scenario; - Assessment of the environmental, economic and social issues related to Sustainable Manufacturing; - Identification of the main drivers of resource depletion and emissions during the materials life cycle; - Approaches and methodologies for the evaluation of production systems; - Application of Life Cycle Analysis, Life Cycle Inventory, Eco-audit tools; - Economics of end-of-life scenarios and assessment of recycling benefit awarding; - Indicators for the analysis of the sustainability of production processes; - Environmental analysis of machining, forming and additive manufacturing processes; - Conventional and non-conventional technologies enabling green manufacturing; - Analysis and evaluation of industrial application cases.
All the course topics will be presented and discussed during the lectures. In addition, the proposed methodologies and procedures will be applied in practical classes for the analysis of real production systems.
[1] Set of presentations for each topic will be available for the students on the Teaching Portal (www.polito.it). [2] Recommended books: - Michael F. Ashby. Materials and the Environment: Eco-informed Material Choice (Second Edition) Elsevier (2013). ISBN: 978-0-12-385971-6. - David A. Dornfeld, Editor. Green Manufacturing - Fundamentals and Applications. Springer (2013). ISBN 978-1-4419-6015-3. [3] Additional material (i.e. papers from the most recent international literature) will be suggested during the lectures.
Exam: Written test;
The exam aims at ascertaining the knowledge of the topics listed in the official course program and the ability to apply the theory and related calculation methods to the solution of industrial problems (coherently with the Expected Learning Outcomes detailed above). The exam lasts 2 hours and consists of a written test containing theoretical questions (including open-ended questions, multiple choice questions, true or false questions) and exercises on the application of models and procedures discussed during the lectures. The use of books and/or other material is forbidden. The assessment is expressed in thirtieths and the exam is passed if the mark is at least 18/30. The exam results are communicated on the teaching portal, together with the date on which students can review the assignment and ask for clarifications. An exam simulation is made available from the beginning of the course.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
