Presentazione This course will act as a 'knowledge bridge' between theory and practice, in specific the practice that refers to urban and regional planning and the related implementation of projects, programmes, initiatives (hereafter referred to as projects) at different scales (from locale to global).
This course is part of one of the three learning areas of the degree course, that relating to "Analysis and evaluation of historical, geographical, economic, environmental and social contexts". The expected learning outcomes meet the training needs of a "planner" able to coordinate or manage multidisciplinary project teams, which deal with planning issues at different scales. In this direction, the course will act as a 'knowledge bridge' between theory and practice, in specific the practice that refers to urban and regional planning and the related implementation of projects, programmes, initiatives at different scales (from local to global). The focus on scale enables geographers/planners to analyze the impact of global changes on local events - and the impact of local events on global changes. As students of territorial facts, they have to pay special attention to the context (places) where these initiatives and projects are implemented.
The overall aim of the course is to develop the students’ abilities to handle complex planning situations. The intention is to foster a critical and creative approach to practical and theoretical work in the field of urban and regional planning within and outside public administration, with private actors, NGOs, national and international agencies, etc.  The students, through practical exercises, will acquire technical tools for the realization of projects ideas and for the preparation of a draft of the project, following different phases in project design and management and including the search for appropriate international partnerships.  After completing this course the student will:  1. demonstrate knowledge of different typologies of project development and organisation  2. demonstrate an understanding of how processes in design, development and subsequent governance shape project outcomes  3. conduct and present a pre-study for a territorial development project suitable for external review by an independent interested organization or funding agency  4. critically reflect on management and/or governance of proposed urban development projects

The intention is to foster a critical and creative approach to practical and theoretical work in the field of urban and regional planning within and outside public administration, with private actors, NGOs, national and international agencies, etc.  The students, through practical exercises, will acquire technical tools - experimenting and learning-by-doing - the realization of projects ideas and for the preparation of a draft of the project, following different phases in project design and management with a place-based approach.  After completing this course the student will:  1. demonstrate knowledge of different typologies of project development and organisation  2. demonstrate an understanding of how processes in design, development and subsequent governance shape project outcomes  3. conduct and present a pre-study for a territorial development project suitable for external review by an independent interested organization or funding agency  4. critically reflect on management and/or governance of proposed urban development projects 5. assess the project at different phases (ex-ante, on-going, ex-post, self.-assessment, territorial assessment).
Basic training in urban studies.
Basic training in urban studies, that involves interdisciplinary studies of urban areas' content, form, planning and development. As scholars from the social and behavioral science disciplines of history, sociology, geography, economics, political science, and anthropology and the professional fields of urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design you need to have most substantial knowledge of urban studies.
The course is taught through introductory lessons, exercises, simulations, case studies, debriefings and discussions. Practice will always be confronted with theory.  As such, it will be an interactive course divided into three main strands:  • Interactive training sessions, examining theoretical (UN Urban Agenda and EU Urban Agenda) and practical aspects of territorial programmes (such as EU Programmes, like CLLD, Urban Innovative Actions or UN Programmes)  • Workshops, simulation exercises and case studies designed to develop project management essential skills  • A simulation exercise on a funded project in which students will practice the tools and techniques explained.  The training will see extensive use of exercises and case studies as well as modules about all funding opportunities proposed by the EU and other international organisation, paying specific attention to the newest programming periods.  Learning activities in the course consist of lectures, workshops, seminars, and presentations. A central part of the course is dedicated to develope input to a territorial development project in collaboration with a governmental organization, private company or NGO. Furthermore, providing constructive critiques to other students' work is considered as an important part of the course

The course will be organized around a number of lectures, projects reviews and students presentations.  In parallel with the lectures, students will be asked to work alone and/or in groups to research and analyse some territorial projects as case studies, according to the parameters that will be given during the lectures. The spatial context of the projects differs according to the interest area and working subjects of students at different scales.  Individual and collective feedbacks are a key part of the exercise, giving the students the opportunity to maximise their personal learning experience.

A few joint talks and practice activities are proposed in cooperation with the course 'Methodologies for Social Inclusion and Participation'.
Most of the course literature consists of articles from scientific journals available through Politecnico di Torino library or case study documentation that will be provided by the professor.
Most of the course literature consists of articles from scientific journals available through Politecnico di Torino library, case study documentation that will be provided by the professor, international documents by United Nations (The New Urban Agenda, Agenda 2030) and by European Union (Official Documents, Reports, Guidelines) available in the websites.
Modalità di esame: Prova orale obbligatoria;
Exam: Compulsory oral exam;
... If you are a student attending the course, you will be assessed according to two forms of examination:  - the active participation in workshops and practical activities, developing and presenting reports during simulation exercises centered around specific case studies (worth 50% of the final mark) - an oral examination on the bases of the report activities to assess the acquired skills and abilities (worth 50% of the final mark) . If you are a student not attending the course, you will be assessed according to three forms of examination: - an oral examination aimed to assess the acquired skills and abilities (worth 50% of the final mark). - a presentation of a report on specific case study (worth 30% of the final mark) - an oral presentation of an article from those suggested (worth 20% of the final mark).

If you are an attending or not attending student, you have to demonstrate the above learning outcomes: knowledge and abilities in project development (from the design to the assessment) that means demonstrate to be a "planner" able to coordinate or manage multidisciplinary project teams, which deal with planning issues at different scales.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
