This course is intended to give an overview of the modelling of nuclear power plants from a system-level perspective. The course is primarily intended for PhD students developing their career in the nuclear field, although all the concepts it introduces are applicable to non-nuclear systems (e.g. electrical grids, automotive and aerospace industry). It presents different approaches behind the state-of-the-art models employed worldwide for the different, critical aspects of fission and fusion reactors, including multi-physics and multi-scale models for neutronics, plasma physics, thermal-hydraulics and safety analyses. Some of the existing tools are introduced, presenting their peculiarities and applications. ~40 % of the hours is devoted to hands-on modelling sessions, introducing Modelica, an object-oriented, a-causal modelling language widely employed in the nuclear field. The students will acquire understanding of existing codes in the nuclear industry, of the modelling principles behind them, as well as the basic knowledge required to build a system-level model from scratch.
