The course merges principles of hydrodynamics, biology and ecology to provide students the necessary skills to - Assess behaviour (individual and collective) of fish in response to hydrodynamic stimuli. - Assess physical habitat availability in rivers and swimming ability of fish fauna. - Design and monitor fish passes

Hydrodynamics and fish: a complex nexus (Manes) General introduction on Ecohydraulics: relevance and scope Principles of fish locomotion Flow sensing and the lateral line Brief review of turbulence in open channel flows Swimming in turbulent flows and energy saving strategies Discussion on some recent research topics: Hydrodynamic space use by trout Eels behaviour in response to hydrodynamics Collective behaviour in moving fluids Physical habitat modelling in rivers and swimming ability of fish (Vezza) Introduction on river hydro-morphological assessment Definition of physical habitat and the scale of analysis Modelling tools to evaluate and quantify habitat availability Machine learning to describe species distribution in natural environments Fish swimming behaviour and strategies Swimming ability tests Influence of flow velocity and water temperature in fish swimming performance Recent results and open scientific questions Fish pass design and monitoring criteria (Comoglio) Fishway location Attraction flow Fishway typologies Design criteria Downstream migration Fishway monitoring techniques
