The course aims to provide the theoretical basis for understanding and describing the mechanical behavior of continuous solids in the case where the deformation cannot be considered infinitesimal and therefore a richer description of kinematics, able to treat finite deformations, is needed. The competence provided by the course (terminology, concepts and methods) is useful for placing theories on the mechanical behavior of materials in a coherent conceptual framework, setting the prerequisites for understanding the numerical methods of solution of nonlinear boundary value problems.
