This course analyses the most recent methodologies, analytical, experimental and numerical, for the analysis of the fatigue response of materials. The course is intended to provide notions not provided in Master’s courses but of relevant importance for the design against fatigue failures of advanced lightweight components currently employed in service conditions.
Basic knowledge on materials fatigue
1) Fatigue from defects: methodologies for the analysis of the fatigue response (4 ore, Prof. Tridello): a. Stress Intensity factor (SIF), Kitagawa Takahashi diagram, Murakami formulation. b. Micro-CT analysis and fatigue tests. c. Applications to Additive Manufacturing components. 2) VHCF response of materials (4 hours, Prof. Paolino): a. VHCF testing machines. b. Design of specimens for ultrasonic VHCF tests. c. Size effect in VHCF. d. Examples of VHCF test results. 3) Advanced statistical analysis of fatigue data (4 hours, Prof. Tridello and Paolino): a. Software for the design curves. b. Fatigue4light models. c. Topology optimization in presence of defects. 4) Fatigue and Machine learning: introduction (4 hours, Prof. Ciampaglia): a. Introduction to Machine Learning. b. Machine learning applied to structural integrity. c. Machine learning applied to fatigue. d. Practical examples. 5) Fatigue design by means of local approaches (6 hours, Prof. Berto) a. Introduction to local approaches for fatigue assessment b. Local energy approach for fatigue design in presence of geometrical discontinuities and complex loadings c. Tutorials and case studies.
